Cody Mcphail – Miss Universe Australia 2021 Finalist Interview

Today we are catching up with Cody Mcphail of Western Australia, one of the 29 talented and inspiring women from all walks of life who are hoping to be crowned Miss Universe Australia 2021.

So Cody , why don’t you tell us a little about yourself?

Hello! I’m Cody; I was born on a little island off the coast of France called Jersey Island and moved to Perth, WA, with my immediate family when I was younger.

I completed a Bachelor of Commerce with a double degree in Property and Finance in 2018. That has led me to my current role, whereby I work full time as a corporate analyst servicing a pool of clients with a turnover >$20m, predominantly based in WA.

In my (very little) spare time, you’ll find me walking along the beautiful Perth coast, having brunch with friends or checking out the newest neighbourhood bar/restaurant!

We all have motivations, mine usually revolving around good coffee, but what was your key motivation for entering the Miss Universe Australia competition?

My key motivation for entering Miss Universe Australia was to step outside my comfort zone. I have a strong growth mindset, so it was an opportunity to practice what I preach whilst being surrounded by like-minded women and collaborating with some iconic local brands.

As part of the program, you recently spent some time up in our hometown of the Gold Coast with the Village Roadshow team; what was the experience like?

The experience was like no other! I’ll be forever grateful to all of the Miss Universe Australia Team, Village Roadshow Team and all of the generous sponsors for allowing us to go on such an incredible trip. We had such jam-packed schedules each day, from theme park rollercoasters to photoshoots, live entertainment shows to sunset river cruises, sunrise yoga sessions to swimming with the sharks and everything in between..we really did get the entire GC experience!

What would you say was the highlight of your trip?

The highlight for me would be our Rusty swim shoot with Jarrad Seng. I’m a massive fan of Jarrad’s work and to be able to shoot with him was an experience I could only dream of.
I was also ecstatic to walk out of there without frostbite after copping the 4 am call time in the Wet and Wild wave pool in a mild 6 degrees!

If you win the title of Miss Universe Australia, you will receive the prestigious Minespec Parts Education and Business grant worth $20,000; what would you do with the grant and why?

If I were lucky enough to receive the grant, I would put it towards furthering my education and applying for my Chartered Accountancy (CA). Having a CA qualification is more often than not a pre-requisite for key decision-making / CFO /CEO roles in business. I believe it would help establish a solid foundation for me to one day be able to achieve such a position.

With everyone bringing their own unique and individual flair to the competition, what is something that sets you apart from the other contestants?

Yes, I agree it’s definitely such a diverse bunch this year, and every one of us brings something different to the table, which is SO refreshing. For me, I would say it’s not taking myself too seriously, which I’m sure the other girls would also vouch for. I have a good balance of poking a bit of fun out of myself and being serious when I need to be.

The last eighteen months certainly have been challenging for all of us; what would you say has been something you’ve gained or learned from the whole experience?

The importance of communication- with friends in all different states and family on the other side of the world, communication has never been so important, and it’s been imperative in navigating through such unprecedented times.  The power of a phone call or text can mean much more than you think!

What is the first thing you hope to do as soon as restrictions are lifted?

I would love to go and visit my family back in Jersey and maybe sneak in some island hopping along the way.

Final Five Questions

Favourite Place to Travel To?
What is something people may find interesting about yourself?
Milos, Greece

The highlight of the last year?
Buying a block of land and commencing my first house build- a very long but very rewarding experience

What is something people may find interesting about yourself?
I am a jalapeno fanatic… I will eat them with almost any meal, haha.

Tell us something you’re passionate about and why?
Females in leadership positions. Of the top 200 ASX listed companies, only 5% of them had a female CEO last year. I currently work in a team of 13 (12 of them being men), so I am incredibly passionate about and really hope to see evolve and the gap improve over the next few years!

One piece of advice you have for us all?
Get comfortable being uncomfortable!

Thank you to
