Behind the titles, the records, and the victories, there is a story that has never been told. Today, Netflix unveiled the release date, teaser, and first-look images for Rafa, a documentary series about Rafael Nadal set to premiere on May 29. Across four episodes, the series provides an intimate and deeply human portrait of one of the greatest legends in sport.
The production offers never-before-seen archival footage alongside exclusive access to the tennis champion, his family, and his inner circle during Nadal’s final year on the ATP Tour in 2024. Retracing his remarkable journey with cinematic scope, the narrative spans from his beginnings as a three-year-old right up to his return to competition in 2024. By blending unseen moments with testimonies from those who know him best both on and off the court, the series reveals what lies behind the legend.
Going beyond the tennis court, the documentary explores the life, story, and legacy of an unparalleled icon. Viewers are introduced to a candid and vulnerable superstar as the series highlights the physical and emotional toll that has shaped his path. Repeatedly, Nadal is shown facing his most constant rival: his own body.

To provide a comprehensive and unprecedented look at his impact, the series features some of the most prominent figures in world tennis. Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and John McEnroe provide testimonies alongside interviews with Nadal’s team and close circle, exploring his influence far beyond competition.
The series is directed by Emmy Award winner and Oscar nominee Zach Heinzerling, whose previous credits include Stolen Youth, Cutie and the Boxer, and McCartney 3,2,1. Production is spearheaded by David Ellison, Jesse Sisgold, Jason Reed, and Jon Weinbach for Skydance Sports. Skydance Sports has previously produced major documentary series for Netflix, including America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys, WWE: Unreal, ELWAY, and the Emmy and PGA nominated AKA Charlie.
