Well, it’s that time of year when the search to find Miss Universe Australia is well underway with finalists being selected across the country.
Early next month at the Sofitel on Collins Melbourne the judging panel have the incredibly hard job of selecting the 2015 Miss Universe Australia.
Today we are chatting with finalist Megan Ryan from South Australia who is one of the national finalists who will be competing for the 2015 title of Miss Universe Australia and hoping to follow in the footsteps of Jennifer Hawkins, Rachael Finch, Jesinta Campbell and last years winner Tegan Martin.
First of all the all-important introduction tell us a little about yourself..? My name is Megan Ryan and I’m 20 years old. I have grown up in the quieter parts of Adelaide, South Australia with my parents, sister and brother. I have been so blessed to have had a wonderful upbringing with a family who has always showed me unconditional love and support. My family has taught me so many valuable lessons, morals and values that have made me the person that I am today. After graduating from Year 12, I began my Bachelor of Nursing Degree at the University of South Australia in 2013. I’m currently in my third and final year of my nursing degree whilst undertaking a placement in the Intensive Care Unit. Studying to become a Registered Nurse has helped me to become more aware of the importance of taking care of our bodies which is knowledge that I enjoy sharing with others. Essentially, I am a kind-hearted and passionate person who loves a bit of adventure! I enjoy travelling, baking for my family and friends, reading books and practicing yoga and meditation.
Megan Congratulations on making it so far in such a coveted competition! We have to ask how has the overall experience been so far …? And how are you feelings in the lead up to the finals. ..? Although this experience has been a little overwhelming, I would consider this to be one of the most exciting times in my life! I have watched the Miss Universe pageant ever since I was a young girl and I have always admired the beauty and intelligence of each Miss Universe Australia titleholder. I feel so privileged to have been chosen as a National Finalist and I feel that I am one step closer to reaching my dreams. I really feel that I am in the right place at the right time and I have prepared myself for this wonderful journey that is ahead of me.
With contestants coming from all over the country and bringing their own individual flare What do you think will set you out from the rest of the finalists competing in the 2015 competition …? It is a given that each contestant will be beautiful and talented in their own unique way. I believe that my self-confidence, passion for empowering others and my genuine, authentic nature will set me apart from the other contestants. I really do believe that no beauty shines brighter than that of a good heart !
What is something people might find interesting about yourself …? I wish I could say that I have a list of interesting facts about myself to share but I am just an ordinary girl! I guess people might be surprised to learn that I am very spiritual and I practice this daily by doing meditation every morning when I wake up and before I go to bed. I read positive affirmations every day which I feel is a really powerful way of setting a positive tone for the day!
Speaking of a person’s unique flare or style what would you say is your best style or beauty secret …? I believe that it is so important to feel confident in what you are wearing! My best tip is to choose outfits that suit your body type. If you feel confident, you will exude confidence. My best beauty secret is to take care of your skin. No matter how tired I may be, I always wash and moisturise my face before I go to bed, that way I wake up feeling fresh and my skin will be glowing. I have been introduced to Elucent Skincare since becoming a finalist for the Miss Universe Australia pageant and it really has worked wonders for me in such a short time. It is also important to choose a foundation that contains SPF to protect your skin from the sun. You will thank yourself in the years to come!
With Fitness becoming more and more a part of a person’s personal style how would you describe your fitness regime and how it relates to your life …? I think that is so wonderful to see that people are making a conscious effort to take care of their body and mind by making fitness a part of their daily routine. I am not much of a gym junkie, I prefer to exercise with whatever equipment I have at home and I love to be outside in nature with fresh air. I go for a walk at least 2-3 times a week and do yoga and pilates every other day. Anyone who knows me knows that I love to eat so it is so important for me to exercise, that way I can indulge in my favourite food without feeling guilty about it afterwards. It’s all about balance and putting a lot of nutrients in to your body!
Who or what inspired you to get involved in the Miss Universe Australia Pageant …? What drew you to such a competition ….? I have followed Jennifer Hawkins ever since she won the title of Miss Universe in 2004. I have been so inspired by her success and what she has accomplished since then. I really admire not only her ability to juggle being one of the most in demand Australian supermodels and being a businesswoman, but her ability to keep level headed. This is what really drew me to entering the competition and I really hope to follow in her footsteps!
Speaking of inspiration who inspires you most …? Over the years, I have been so blessed to have amazing people contribute to my life. I have been so lucky to grow up in a loving and supportive family where each and every person has played an integral part in helping to shape the person that I am today. My beautiful Sister, who is five years older than me, has been the biggest inspiration for me. Ever since I was a little girl, I have admired her ability to make smart and ethical decisions, her independence, ambition, kind nature, and loyalty. She has always given me the best advice and I really don’t think that I would be the person that I am today if I didn’t have her around!
The Miss Universe Pageant has a long history of associating with charity are there any social causes that are particularly close to your heart that you would like to use the platform of miss universe to advance …? The best part about being crowned Miss Universe Australia is that it provides you with a platform to draw the public’s attention to charities that you feel most passionately about. Make-A-Wish Australia is a non-for-profit organisation that was founded in 1985. The purpose of the organisation is to grant wishes to children who are suffering from life-threatening illnesses, giving them the hope and strength that they need in order to face challenges ahead of them. I feel so passionately about this organisation as I hope to use my skills as a registered nurse to work with children one day.
What is something you hope to bring out of the Miss Universe Australia Pageant …? Ultimately, although this experience will help me to grow and become a more confident woman, my goal is to help others realise their potential. I want to empower those around me and lead people to a life of self-love and care. Ideally, this is what I hope to gain from this experience!
