Miss Universe Australia 2015 Finalist - Monica Paige

Well, it’s that time of year when the search to find Miss Universe Australia is well underway with finalists being selected across the country.
Early next month at the Sofitel on Collins Melbourne the judging panel have the incredibly hard job of selecting the 2015 Miss Universe Australia.

Today we are chatting with finalist Monica Paige from Tasmania who is one of the national finalists who will be competing for the 2015 title of Miss Universe Australia and hoping to follow in the footsteps of Jennifer Hawkins, Rachael Finch, Jesinta Campbell and last years winner Tegan Martin.

First of all the all-important introduction tell us a little about yourself…?
I have recently finished my hairdressing apprenticeship and absolutely love going to work each day! I am currently doing my nail technology course and will go on to do my full beauty therapist training. I am enrolled at Utas to do my Bachelor or Education as I plan to teach hair and beauty to students later on. I love spending time at the beach and outdoors! I really wish it was summer all year round! I also love anything arty and crafty.

Monica Congratulations on making it so far in such a coveted competition! We have to ask how has the overall experience been so far …?   And how are you feelings in the lead up to the finals. ..?  Miss Universe Australia 2015 Finalist - Monica Paige2

Miss Universe Australia has been an amazing experience so far! It all feels a bit surreal to have made it into the national finals! Growing up I have always been very shy and lacked confidence so this is something I just never imagined myself doing!! Now in the lead up to the finals things are getting very exciting! I can’t wait to meet all the girls and I think we will have the experience of a lifetime!

With contestants coming from all over the country and bringing their own individual flare
What do you think will set you out from the rest of the finalists  competing in the 2015 competition …?

I think my height might set me apart! I am 6ft (or close enough to) so I am usually the tallest girl wherever I go! I also think that for me as someone who has always been shy and reserved, this experience has been quite challenging as I have really had to push myself and break through my comfort zone which has taken a lot of determination!  I think that this confidence may come more naturally to other contestants.

What is something people might find interesting about yourself …?

I love travelling and exploring other cultures. I have been to Vanuatu, Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia. It is a huge eye opener to see how people live in these countries and has really made me appreciate everything we have here in Australia and how lucky we are! I can’t wait to keep exploring more new and amazing places!

Speaking of a person’s unique flare or style what  would you say is your best style or beauty secret …?  I love my Doc Martens – I wear them almost everywhere!! My beauty secret is definitely to drink heaps and heaps of water! I can’t get enough of it! Now from a hairdresser’s perspective, avoid using irons and heat on your hair as much as possible as is it so drying and damaging! I am lucky to have natural curls so I just let it dry naturally everyday which is effortless and my hair is so healthy!

With Fitness becoming more and more a part of a person’s personal style how would you describe your fitness regime and how it relates to your life …? I must admit I am not really one to be found at the gym but I do include fitness in my life where ever I can. I walk to and from work every day, I enjoy bike riding and I love swimming and kayaking.

Who or what inspired you to get involved in the Miss Universe Australia Pageant …? What drew you to such a competition ….?

At first I was actually quite reluctant to enter Miss Universe Australia! I have never been involved in a pageant before and I was terrified of public speaking! However, it is not very often that we have opportunities such as this come to Launceston so I thought why not give it a go! I thought it would be an amazing experience and great for my confidence – which it really has been! I think Miss Universe Australia is very empowering for young women around the country, as it gives them the opportunity to have their voices heard; inspire others and be positive role models. It also opens up many doors of opportunity in their futures.

Speaking of inspiration who inspires you most …?

My late grandmother is my biggest inspiration of all time. She had so much beauty and class, but was also a caring and gentle natured person on the inside. I want to be like her and possess these qualities throughout my life. I think it is so important to always remain humble and put others before yourself.

The Miss Universe Pageant has a long history of associating with charity are there any social causes that are particularly close to your heart that you would like to  use the platform of miss universe to advance …?

I would like to raise awareness for domestic violence against women and girls as this has become a huge issue around the world affecting as many as one in three women in their lifetime; often going unseen.  Safe Futures is a foundation who are committed to making a real difference by delivering effective choices, opportunities and responses to those who have experienced control, abuse and violence in the home, allowing them to heal, gain strength and become empowered and self-determining.

What is something you hope to bring out of the Miss Universe Australia Pageant …? When I first got involved in Miss Universe Australia my main goal was to gain more confidence in myself which I can say I definitely have! I have made great friendships with my fellow state finalists and can’t wait to meet all the girls from around Australia as I am sure I will make some amazing new friends!
