Apple has unveiled its latest innovation in the world of Artificial Intelligence (AI): Apple Intelligence. This new system, designed to enhance the personal experience of iPhone, iPad, and Mac users, combines the capabilities of generative models with personal context to provide relevant and helpful intelligence.
Apple Intelligence is deeply integrated into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, harnessing the potential of Apple silicon to understand and generate language and images. It also simplifies and accelerates everyday tasks. Notably, Apple is setting a new standard in AI privacy, allowing the system to flex and scale its computational capacity between on-device processing and larger server-based models, which run on dedicated Apple silicon servers.
Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, expressed his excitement about this major development in Apple’s innovation. “Apple Intelligence will transform what users can do with our products — and what our products can do for our users,” said Cook. He emphasized Apple’s unique approach, which combines generative AI with a user’s personal context to deliver truly helpful intelligence while maintaining complete privacy and security.
The introduction of Apple Intelligence opens up new possibilities for users to enhance their writing and communication skills. With new system-wide Writing Tools incorporated into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, users can rewrite, proofread, and summarise text across applications, including Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps.
In addition to language understanding, Apple Intelligence introduces exciting image creation capabilities. Image Playground, a new feature, allows users to create fun images in seconds, choosing from three styles: Animation, Illustration, or Sketch.
Apple has also reimagined emojis with the introduction of Genmojis, which users can create by simply typing a description. Furthermore, the search function in Photos becomes more convenient with the ability to search for specific photos using natural language.
Siri also enters a new era, becoming more integrated into the system experience. Powered by Apple Intelligence, Siri is now more natural, contextually relevant, and personal.
Apple Intelligence also sets a new standard for privacy in AI. With the cornerstone of on-device processing, many of the models that power it run entirely on the device. More complex requests that require additional processing power can be run on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute tech infrastructure.
