Australian centre Elizabeth Cambage, the leading scorer in the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games women’s basketball tournament, was disqualified from the gold-medal final against England with 6:34 left in the second quarter tonight (14 April).
Cambage was called for an unsportsmanlike foul when she and England centre Azania Stewart got tangled up under the visitors’ basket with 7:20 to go in the half.
Then, visibly upset with a lack of fouls called against physical England defenders, Cambage received a technical foul, while waiting to take free throws with Australia leading 30-17.
Cambage walked to the locker room with her towel on her shoulders, arms raised, waving to a cheering home crowd at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre.
