Dane Bird Smith aka Birdman (Aus) edged a close race in a Commonwealth Games record time of 1:19.34 at the stunning Currumbin Beachfront.
The Australian finished four seconds clear of Englands Tom Bosworth, who claimed silver in a national record of 1.19.38
Samuel Ireri Gathimba (KEN) clinched a first Commonwealth Games race-walking medal for Kenya in bronze with a time of 1.19.51
