Basketball fans across Australia are in for a blockbuster as the Australian Boomers gear up to host the University of Colorado Buffaloes in a headline exhibition match on the Gold Coast on 31 July โ just weeks out from the Boomersโ title defence at the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup.
Announced today by Basketball Australia, the Boomers vs Buffaloes matchup promises a thrilling mix of NBA, NBL, and NCAA talent on the same floor โ giving Aussie fans a rare chance to witness elite basketball action in the lead-up to international competition.
This highly anticipated game will mark the debut of Adam Caporn as Head Coach of the Boomers. Itโs a key opportunity to shape team identity and test game systems before Australiaโs Asia Cup campaign begins in Jeddah this August.
โI couldnโt be more excited to return to Australia and get on the floor with the group,โ Caporn said.
โI see the Asia Cup as a critical first step in building our system and re-establishing the Boomersโ culture.โ
Caporn, a former college coach himself, views the visit from the Colorado Buffaloes as a โvaluable challengeโ that will help set the tone for what lies ahead.
โA high-level NCAA program like Colorado will undoubtedly present an important early benchmark for us. The energy, athleticism, and discipline of an elite college team will push us to pressure-test our system under game conditions.โ
Building for Gold and Green Glory
As defending champions, the Boomers are using this matchup not just as a warm-up, but as a foundational piece in their Asia Cup preparation.
โRepresenting Australia is an honour and a privilege,โ Caporn said. โOur focus will always be on competing in a way that makes our country proud.โ
Caporn also acknowledged the quality of coaching and structure the Buffaloes bring under long-time Head Coach Tad Boyle, highlighting the mutual respect between programs.
โHaving previously worked in college basketball, Iโve seen a lot of strong Colorado teams under Coach Boyle. His teams are consistently disciplined on the defensive end and always ready to compete.โ
A New Chapter for the Buffs
For Colorado, the Australian tour offers a valuable team-building opportunity following a tough season in the Big 12 Conference. Boyle sees the tour as a chance to develop chemistry and gain international perspective.
โThe one thing about Australian basketball is that thereโs a lot of pride,โ Boyle said. โWhen you put on that Boomers uniform as an Australian, it means something, and those guys play like it means something to them.โ
โItโll be a heck of a challenge for us, heck of an opportunity to get better. You want to play against the best โ so weโre trying to do that.โ
The Colorado womenโs program also shares strong ties to Australia. Two Australians โ Tabitha Betson and Jade Crook, both Centre of Excellence graduates โ are currently on the roster. Former CoE alumni Sara-Rose Smith and Emma Clarke have also suited up for CU in recent years.
Adding to the connection, former Melbourne United guard and Colorado alumnus Nate Tomlinson was recently announced as an assistant coach on Boyleโs staff for the upcoming NCAA season.
Gold Coast: The Sporting Stage
Set against the backdrop of one of Australiaโs most iconic coastal cities, the game further elevates the Gold Coastโsreputation as a hub for sport and entertainment โ a profile thatโs only growing as the city prepares to host events for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
โIt doesnโt get any bigger than this โ the Boomers on court against the Colorado Buffaloes,โ said Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate.
โThis week-long program underscores our cityโs commitment to bring the best events and the biggest sports experiences to the coast.โ
Tate encouraged fans to take advantage of the opportunity to see national-level athletes up close.
โEvery basketball enthusiast will want to be courtside… Itโs showtime on the Gold Coast.โ
