When someone is passionate about something, you can hear it in their voice – their zealous energy; their obvious enthusiasm. Nikki Mitchell is passionate about one thing in particular – make up.
“I think when you enjoy art and drawing, it comes out naturally in makeup application. It’s like the face is your blank canvas. I love making people feel the best that they can, coming straight from their natural beauty.”
Based in Miami on the Gold Coast, Nikki has gone from strength to strength, establishing a highly regarded name for her business, Nikki Mitchell Make-up Artist & Spray Tanning. In an off-hand, humble voice, Nikki mentions, “oh yes, I’ve done make-up for Miranda Kerr, and when Toni Collette and Naomi Watts were in Australia I looked after them,” as if this is a simple and everyday feat. And, if this wasn’t enough, Nikki has done the make-up and spray tanning for Billabong, Lorna Jane and Versace – to mention a few.
“Makeup is my passion, and spray tanning just seemed to happen. I began mixing my own solution because I thought that there were so many tanning products that were too green, orange and yellow based. Eventually, I came up with a colour that I love, which is a natural olive tone, and from there, the spray tanning side of my business just continued to grow!”
What makes a good make-up artist, you ask?
“Your client needs to feel like they can trust you. They need to be comfortable – your appearance is a big deal! I think to be a good makeup artist, you need to be constantly refreshing yourself with the latest fashions and trends, so that you can appreciate the tastes and styles of people at every age. When I’ve finished a client’s makeup, I always ask if they’re happy with it, because I never want them to leave feeling like they’re not one hundred percent happy.”
Best beauty tip?
“If I had to pick one, I’d say that less is more. So many girls these days overdo it with fake accessories and the like, creating this incredibly false image. Envisage class, and present yourself like so.”
As for future plans, Nikki has many. She is currently in the process of creating her own make-up range, which, initially, will include lipsticks and lip glosses, with the hope of branching into foundations further along the line.
For Nikki, we’re sure; it’s only up from here.
Nikki is a sponsor for the upcoming QT Fashion Week 2014 on the Gold Coast.
