Today we’re chatting with Chelsea Johnston from Queensland, one of 30 remarkable women vying for the Miss Universe Australia 2025 crown

Today we’re chatting with Chelsea Johnston from Queensland, one of 30 remarkable women vying for the Miss Universe Australia 2025 crown, to be decided on August 15 at Crown Perth’s Grand Ballroom.

So, why don’t you start by telling us a bit about yourself?

I’m 25 years old and have been modelling for over 10 years, signed with Viviens Model Management. I also have a business management degree from the University of Queensland, where I lived on campus for three years. I now live with some of my closest friends from university. Alongside modelling, I work in fashion marketing and social media.

What inspired you to take the leap and enter Miss Universe Australia?

The opportunity presented itself at a perfect time in my life and career. I had just gone through a breakup and was ready for something more. I have big goals for my modelling career, some of which I have already ticked off, but I am ready to take it to the next level.

As part of the program, you had the amazing opportunity to travel to Vietnam, and stay at the beautiful Hoiana Resort. How was that experience for you?

The experience was absolutely incredible. Hoiana Resort was nothing short of amazing. The people, the culture, the facilities – it is second to none. I had never been to Vietnam prior and the Vietnamese people are so welcoming! I look forward to visiting again soon.

What would you say was the highlight of the trip?

That’s a tough one – there were so many memorable moments! Meeting all the amazing women I’d connected with online was so special and the energy during the walking classes with Thelma was unmatched (I’m a sucker for a runway!). I also felt completely in my element during my official swimwear shoot with the most incredible team. However, the most special moment was visiting Hearing and Beyond. Spending time with the kids and seeing the joy on their faces was unforgettable.

As part of the trip, you also took part in your official swimwear shoot with Unnecessary the Label. How was that experience for you?

I knew the official swimwear shoot was going to be fun but it was even better than I expected. I had such a fun setting with lots of fresh props which made the energy electric, but no spoilers!

Your next question comes from our current Miss Universe Australia, Zoe Creed. If your younger self could see you today, not just on this stage but as a person, what do you think she’d be most proud of and why?

I think she’d be most proud that I’m chasing my dreams. As a little girl, I always had big ambitions and knew I wanted more for myself. Seeing the woman I’ve become – driven, focused, and staying true to that vision – would make her incredibly proud.

With everyone bringing their own unique flair to the program, what would you say sets you apart from the other contestants?

My modelling experience. Being in the industry for 11 years has meant I have had incredible opportunities like international campaigns for Triangl Swimwear, commercials for Garnier and working with iconic Australian brands like Seafolly, Billabong and Scanlan and Theodore.

What’s something about you that people might find surprising or interesting?

I ran a full marathon last year! I had run half marathons previously but I was ready to finally tick off a full. And let me tell you, it was full on.

If you could work on any dream project, with no limits on time or resources, what would it be?

I would do exactly what I’m doing currently, but more! I would love to walk at Paris Fashion Week, host Australian Fashion Week and land more international campaigns.

We have a few quick questions to wrap up the interview:

What’s a song that never fails to lift your mood?
Man! I Feel Like a Woman! by Shania Twain

What does confidence mean to you?
Truly knowing who you are and showing up authentically and unapologetically as yourself.

If you had to swap lives with someone for a day, who would it be and why?
Candice Swanepoel! She is an icon and has such an amazing walk.

What’s one thing you always have in your handbag (besides your phone)?
Lip balm! I can’t stand having dry lips, so I always make sure I have some with me.

Window or aisle seat on a flight?
Aisle! I always need to go to the bathroom haha.
