It is hard to believe that 25 years have passed since we first heard the roar of Dominic Toretto’s engine. On June 22, 2001, a thrilling film about Los Angeles street racing premiered, introducing us to a crew that would become family. Now, The Fast and the Furious is gearing up for a spectacular celebration at the 79th Festival de Cannes.

A Midnight Ride on the Croisette

To mark a quarter of a century of high-octane action, the festival will host a special midnight screening of the original film on Wednesday, May 13 at 11.45 pm. The Grand ThĂ©Ă¢tre Lumière will welcome original stars Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, and Jordana Brewster, alongside producer Neal H. Mortiz. In a touching tribute to the late Paul Walker, his daughter Meadow Walker will also be in attendance to honour the milestone.

What started as a focused story about street racing has grown into Universal Pictures’ most profitable and longest-running franchise. Over 11 films, the Fast & Furious series has earned more than $7 billion U.S. at the worldwide box office. The secret to this massive success is not just the incredible car chases and wild stunts across exotic locations, but the deep familial bond shared by the characters and felt by a devoted global audience.

Expanding the Fast & Furious Family

The Fast Saga has continuously reinvented itself, drawing in a massive and diverse cast over the decades. Core members like Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Sung Kang, and Nathalie Emmanuel have been joined by absolute Hollywood heavyweights. From Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham to Academy Award winners Helen Mirren, Brie Larson, and Charlize Theron, the star power is undeniable.

This pop-culture phenomenon has even expanded beyond the cinema into toys, video games, an animated series, and the successful spin-off Hobbs & Shaw. Fans can also look forward to the road ahead, as Universal has announced a thrilling new chapter.

Fast Forever is set to race into theatres on March 17, 2028.

For now, the midnight screening at Cannes offers a perfect moment to reflect on the legacy of a film that truly changed cinema history.
