Cyclone Set to Make Landfall Friday Morning

Southeast Queensland is on high alert as Tropical Cyclone Alfred moves west towards the coast, with the Gold Coast expected to take a direct hit. The latest modelling from the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) indicates that Alfred will likely cross the coastline on Friday later in the morning , with landfall predicted between Maroochydore and Coolangatta.

While the Gold Coast & Brisbane is set to bear the brunt of the cyclone, dangerous conditions will stretch as far north as the Sunshine Coast and as far south as Grafton in New South Wales.

Cyclone Alfred at a Glance

Intensity: category 2, sustained winds near the centre of 95 kilometres per hour with wind gusts to 130 kilometres per hour.
Location: within 20 kilometres of 27.5 degrees South, 155.9 degrees East , 285 kilometres east of Brisbane and 260 kilometres east northeast of Gold Coast .
Movement: west southwest at 7 kilometres per hour .

Tropical Cyclone Alfred will continue its approach towards the southeast Queensland coast, with the far western edge already impacting the coast between Coolangatta and Ballina.

Alfred is a category 2 cyclone, and is forecast to maintain this intensity as it continues to approach the southeast Queensland coast. The centre of Alfred is expected to cross the coast early Friday and continue into Saturday, most likely between Maroochydore and Coolangatta.

Queensland Government School Closures

As Tropical Cyclone Alfred approaches Queensland, authorities have announced the closure of hundreds of schools to ensure the safety of students and staff. As of 11:00 AM today, 663 state schools, Catholic schools, and independent school have been closed for for TC Alfred.
