Finals Day at the Quiksilver Pro and Boost Mobile Pro, Stop No. 1 on the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT), is ON at 6:35 a.m. AEST. The Final Series will take place at Duranbah, the event’s backup site, with three-to-four foot (0.9 – 1.2 metre) conditions for the men’s Quarterfinals, women’s Semifinals, men’s Semifinals, and men’s and Women’s Finals.
“Finals Day for the Quiksilver Pro and Boost Mobile Pro is on,” said Kieren Perrow, WSL Competition Director. “We will run at 6:35 a.m. AEST at Duranbah, our backup site, starting with the men’s Quarterfinals. Following the men’s Quarters, we will run the women’s Semifinals, men’s Semifinals, women’s Final, and men’s Final. Best of luck to all of our competitors today.”
Today’s Finals Day will see the first Championship Tour winners of the 2019 season. The competition will also make history as the first CT event of the 2019 season to award equal prize money.
The opening heat of the day will see two-time WSL Champion John John Florence (HAW) take on Conner Coffin (USA) as both surfers look for their best result at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast.
The last time reigning WSL Champion, Gabriel Medina (BRA), won the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, he went on to win the World Title (2014), which will no doubt be on his mind when he comes up against Jordy Smith (ZAF).
The Boost Mobile Pro Gold Coast has only four competitors remaining including 2018 CT Rookie of the Year Caroline Marks (USA), Hawaii’s Malia Manuel (HAW), Aussie title threat Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), and three-time WSL Champion Carissa Moore (HAW). All four women will now compete for the biggest CT prize purse and the historic win to start their 2019 campaigns.
