Today we’re chatting with Jade Portogallo from Victoria, one of 30 remarkable women vying for the Miss Universe Australia 2025 crown, to be decided on August 15 at Crown Perth’s Grand Ballroom.

So, why don’t you start by telling us a bit about yourself?

I’m 21 years old and currently based in Melbourne, where I work as a fashion stylist. I’m passionate about helping others express their confidence through personal style, and I’m incredibly excited for the journey ahead with Miss Universe Australia.

What inspired you to take the leap and enter Miss Universe Australia?

What inspired me to take the leap and enter Miss Universe Australia was a desire to step outside my comfort zone and grow into the most confident version of myself. I knew this experience would challenge me in all the right ways and so far, it’s been nothing short of incredible.

As part of the program, you had the amazing opportunity to travel to Vietnam, and stay at the beautiful Hoiana Resort. How was that experience for you?

Travelling to Vietnam with Miss Universe Australia was truly unforgettable. From the stunning Hoiana Resort to the warmth of the people, every moment was filled with beauty and connection. I had the chance to meet so many inspiring individuals and experience a culture so rich in kindness and generosity. One of the most meaningful parts of the trip was visiting Hearing and Beyond, where we connected with incredible children who were so eager to learn, laugh, and engage with us. It’s an experience I’ll carry with me forever.

What would you say was the highlight of the trip?

The highlight of the trip for me was definitely the NIDA course we took part in. It was such a powerful experience. We explored so much beneath the surface, and I felt like I truly got to know everyone in the room on a much deeper level. It also gave me a chance to reflect inward and connect with parts of myself I hadn’t tapped into before. It was emotional, eye-opening, and something I’ll never forget.

As part of the trip, you also took part in your official swimwear shoot with Unnecessary the Label. How was that experience for you?

This was actually my first ever swimwear shoot, and it was such an incredible experience. From the moment the day started to my time on set, the team made me feel so supported and confident. I shot at the Quang Nam House, which had such a beautiful vibe with stunning floor-to-ceiling windows and unique spaces in every room. The swimsuit I wore was this gorgeous green shade that fit like a dream and worked perfectly with the setting. I honestly felt so comfortable and empowered throughout the whole shoot.

Your next question comes from our current Miss Universe Australia, Zoe Creed. If your younger self could see you today, not just on this stage but as a person, what do you think she’d be most proud of and why?

I think my younger self would be so proud that I’ve started chasing my dreams and turning them into reality, things that once felt so far out of reach. She’d be proud of the confidence I’ve built, the risks I’ve taken, and the way I’ve stayed true to myself through it all. What once felt like just a dream is now part of my journey, and I know she’d be smiling seeing how far I’ve come.

With everyone bringing their own unique flair to the program, what would you say sets you apart from the other contestants?

I think what sets me apart is my authenticity. I’m very real, kind, and loving in how I connect with others. I believe that genuine kindness goes a long way. I bring heart and honesty to everything I do, and that helps me build meaningful connections with people around me.

What’s something about you that people might find surprising or interesting?

Something people might find surprising about me is that I’m a qualified lifesaver. It’s a bit random, but it’s a skill I’m proud of and one that not many people expect!

If you could work on any dream project, with no limits on time or resources, what would it be?

If I could work on any dream project, it would be to open more Hearing & Beyond schools around the world. Every child deserves access to education and the chance to thrive, no matter their circumstances. I’d love to create spaces where children not only learn but feel seen, supported, and empowered to build a better future. With no limits, I’d bring resources, passionate educators, and a global community together to make that dream a reality.

We have a few quick questions to wrap up the interview:

What’s a song that never fails to lift your mood?
Any song from the Burlesque (Christina Aguilera & Cher) album.

What does confidence mean to you?
To me, confidence means feeling good in your own skin and being comfortable with who you are. It’s about putting your best foot forward and believing in yourself.

If you had to swap lives with someone for a day, who would it be and why?
If I could swap lives with anyone for a day, I’d choose Mel Robbins. I think she’s incredibly talented and has a real gift for helping people through her words and experiences. I really admire her confidence, honesty, and the way she empowers others, and I aspire to have a similar impact one day.

What’s one thing you always have in your handbag (besides your phone)?
My EpiPen.

Window or aisle seat on a flight?
Aisle seat always.
