Jessica Kernjak - Miss Universe Australia 2025 Finalist Interview

Today we’re chatting with Jessica Kernjak from Victoria, one of 30 remarkable women vying for the Miss Universe Australia 2025 crown

Today we’re chatting with Jessica Kernjak from Victoria, one of 30 remarkable women vying for the Miss Universe Australia 2025 crown, to be decided on August 15 at Crown Perth’s Grand Ballroom.

So, why don’t you start by telling us a bit about yourself?

I’m 26 and from country Victoria, where the cows outnumber people and you learn a thing or two about electric fences. I’ve always had a deep love for animals and the outdoors, which led me to complete a degree in Veterinary and Wildlife Science. I now split my time between modelling, acting, and creative directing my crazy ideas into cinematic masterpieces. I work a little too well under pressure, so well that I jam-pack my life with one big dream or idea after another.

What inspired you to take the leap and enter Miss Universe Australia?

I was inspired by the possibilities, the unknown and what that could bring. I made a pact to myself that I would give this year my all, that I would do something every single day to make sure I get to where I want to be. Pushing past the boundaries of motivation with discipline and sure enough, my dreams are coming true. It sounds all very clichĂ©, but I’ve ticked off just about everything on my 2025 mood board. I have one very big goal left… can you guess what it is?

As part of the program, you had the amazing opportunity to travel to Vietnam, and stay at the beautiful Hoiana Resort. How was that experience for you?

Words can’t even begin to describe what a wonderful experience I had. The resort itself was so beautifully architected, I’ve never seen anything like it. Don’t even get me started on the food — I went back for seconds every meal, sometimes thirds.

We were so lucky to experience an incredible lineup of activities during our time in Vietnam, from pickleball and golf to walking classes, stunning photoshoots, and even a course with NIDA. But what made the trip truly unforgettable was the bond we all formed along the way. One core memory that will stay with me forever was visiting Hearing and Beyond. The children there completely stole my heart, and the impact of that day will stay with me always.

What would you say was the highlight of the trip? As part of the trip, you also took part in your official swimwear shoot with Unnecessary the Label. How was that experience for you?

It was an absolute honour shooting with Jared, he has such an incredible eye for capturing the perfect moment. Paired with Soph’s creative direction and the talent of Alarna and David, it was chef’s kiss. We had so much fun on set… I even jumped in the pool to wrap up the shoot, and yes, those shots definitely made the cut.

Your next question comes from our current Miss Universe Australia, Zoe Creed. If your younger self could see you today, not just on this stage but as a person, what do you think she’d be most proud of and why?

I often reflect on my younger self, she is one determined little lady. She would be proud that I didn’t shrink myself to fit in, that I stayed kind and followed my dreams guns blazing. Every hurdle, setback, and failure has led us here and I truly could not be more grateful for her efforts.

With everyone bringing their own unique flair to the program, what would you say sets you apart from the other contestants?

My blend of scientific knowledge and creative expression gives me a unique lens. I’ve lived in small towns and walked red carpets, and through it all, I’ve stayed deeply connected to people and purpose.

What’s something about you that people might find surprising or interesting?

Animals seem to gravitate towards me. I grew up in a house that felt more like a wildlife sanctuary — at one point, I was bottle-feeding a kangaroo joey in the kitchen while orphaned lambs wearing nappies bounced through the hallway. I even had a rescue roster for baby birds that fell out of their nests. Chaos? Absolutely. But I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

If you could work on any dream project, with no limits on time or resources, what would it be?

I’d love to integrate trained service animals into schools to support neurodivergent children, combining my science background with my passion for inclusive education. Ideally, it would include mobile animal therapy units in rural communities where access is limited. That would be my heart project.

We have a few quick questions to wrap up the interview:

What’s a song that never fails to lift your mood?
Roy Orbison – Oh, Pretty Woman

What does confidence mean to you?
Confidence is trusting your own voice, even when it shakes. It’s showing up fully, not perfectly.

If you had to swap lives with someone for a day, who would it be and why?
Margot Robbie. She’s clever, cool, and absolutely killing it in both Hollywood and business. Plus, imagine walking onto a film set as Margot and everyone just gasping? Yes please.

What’s one thing you always have in your handbag (besides your phone)?
My cherry pin — for good luck.

Window or aisle seat on a flight?
Window for two reasons:

  1. The best headrest for a snooze.
  2. The sunrise views above the clouds.
