A little sunshine every day is great for boosting our mood and loading our body with vitamins. That’s why we love going on our daily outdoor walks! Unfortunately, this past year has made it a bit trickier to go outside to get our much-needed dose of Vitamin D.
Even though we’re spending more time indoors, it’s important that we continue to look after our skin. To keep your skin as healthy as possible, you want to avoid exposure to sunlight without SPF, as exposure to UV rays can age and damage the skin. The best thing you can do for your skin is to protect it with SPF daily – even if you’re just going outside for your short daily walk!
So what’s the best way to protect your skin from UV rays? We called on the expert advice of INIKA Organic to shed some light on why you need to wear SPF inside, and the best way to protect your skin daily.
Does sunscreen prevent ageing?
The sun emits two types of radiation: UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays are a main contributing factor to ageing and skin cancer. Signs that your skin has suffered from sun exposure can be seen in the form of dark spots, wrinkles and leathery, textured skin.
Ensuring you’re wearing SPF even when you’re indoors can help prevent signs of ageing and provide protection for your skin. It’s important to know how to protect yourself from UV rays – after all, you want to prevent damage to your skin, not try to repair it with skincare after the damage has been done!
Do you need SPF indoors?
The short answer is, yes, you still need to wear SPF even if you’re spending the day at home. If you are sitting beside a window while you work from home for example, it’s important you’re still wearing SPF. UVA and UVB rays can penetrate glass and could still cause damage and signs of ageing to your skin.
Plus, SPF isn’t only used to protect us from the sun. There are a number of harmful rays we are still exposed to indoors.
For example, chances are you’ve been exposed to a lot more screens this year. And do computer screens give off UV rays? The answer is no – newer computers and laptops don’t emit UV light at all. What they do emit however, is blue light. Long-term blue light exposure from computer and TV screens can cause skin damage, including colour changes, inflammation, and weakening of the skin’s surface. Not all SPF protection will work to combat the blue light side effects, so you’ll want to look for those containing Zinc Oxide.
How does Zinc Oxide work?
Zinc Oxide is a broad-spectrum blocker, meaning it protects your skin from UVA, UVB, and even UVC and blue light exposure. Upon application, Zinc Oxide forms an invisible layer on the surface of your skin, physically blocking these harmful rays. It’s the best sun protection you could ask for!
How to protect your face from the sun
If you don’t like wearing sunscreen, make sure you’re at least still protecting your skin by wearing makeup with SPF in it. The SPF in INIKA’s beauty products is made with powerful minerals extracted from the Earth, naturally-derived from Titanium and Zinc Oxide. They provide chemical-free sun protection to safeguard the skin against blue light from LED screens as well as UV rays from the sun.
