Kelly Slater Returns to Teahupo'o as 2026 Wildcard

Surfing legend Kelly Slater returns to Teahupo'o as a wildcard for the 2026 Outerknown Tahiti Pro after recovering from surgery.

Eleven-time World Champion Kelly Slater is set to make a return to competitive surfing. The renowned athlete will compete as a wildcard at the upcoming Outerknown Tahiti Pro, which serves as Stop No. 7 on the 2026 World Surf League Championship Tour. The event window will run from August 8 to 18, 2026, bringing the world’s elite back to the heavy waves of Teahupo’o.

The return holds special significance for Slater. His sustainable apparel brand, Outerknown, is celebrating its 11-year anniversary by serving as the event’s title sponsor. Over his three-decade career, Slater has mastered the iconic Tahitian break, securing five event victories from seven finals. His history at the venue includes two perfect heat totals of 20 and an unforgettable 2014 semifinal clash with John John Florence, where both athletes scored 19.77.

Recovering and ready for the challenge Slater enters the competition following a period of rehabilitation, eager to test his skills at a familiar break.

“I’m stoked to be in as a wildcard at Teahupo’o this year,” said Kelly Slater. “I’ve been recovering from hip surgery late last year and recently got back to surfing daily. I’m really looking forward to getting myself locked in before August comes around and hoping for great conditions in Tahiti to give us all a good challenge. No pressure for me coming into this one, but I also haven’t competed in quite a long time, so it’ll be fun to see how I go getting in the mix with everyone. If I can relax and just focus on what I know out there, I should have a good time.”
