Today we’re chatting with Lochie Barnett from Victoria, one of 30 remarkable women vying for the Miss Universe Australia 2025 crown, to be decided on August 15 at Crown Perth’s Grand Ballroom.
So, why don’t you start by telling us a bit about yourself?
I am 26 years old and I grew up on a really small island in New Zealand. I have been modelling for the last 11 years, among other things. I absolutely love all things outdoors. I grew up surrounded by beaches and riding horses down into the ocean. I’m definitely a small-town girl, but I have loved living in Melbourne since moving here when I was 20. I love fashion and the industry I work in is really fun. I have been able to meet so many amazing people and no two workdays are the same.
What inspired you to take the leap and enter Miss Universe Australia?
I have some friends who have done MUA in previous years and absolutely loved it. The personal growth and opportunities that came from doing this changed their lives. I wanted to try this because I’ve never done anything like it. The incredible girls I’ve met and the experiences are once in a lifetime.
As part of the program, you had the amazing opportunity to travel to Vietnam, and stay at the beautiful Hoiana Resort. How was that experience for you?
Travelling to Vietnam with the team and all of the girls was the most unforgettable experience. Staying at Hoiana was a luxury I’ve never experienced before. We did so many different things on the trip, from golf and cooking classes to walking workshops and a charity visit. Truly an incredible trip, we all felt so lucky to be there.
What would you say was the highlight of the trip?
For me it was the NIDA course we all did. It was such a pivotal moment for me, and I got so much out of it. Public speaking has always been an issue for me, but we learnt so many tools to take with us that I will use forever.
As part of the trip, you also took part in your official swimwear shoot with Unnecessary the Label. How was that experience for you?
That was such a fun day for me. I do modelling as a job, so I was completely in my element shooting on the beach. I felt really comfortable and confident in my Unnecessary swim.
Your next question comes from our current Miss Universe Australia, Zoe Creed. If your younger self could see you today, not just on this stage but as a person, what do you think she’d be most proud of, and why?
I think she would be most proud of my personal growth and development as a person. I used to struggle a lot with anxiety, but I have done the work to really remove those barriers for myself, which I am proud of.
With everyone bringing their own unique flair to the program, what would you say sets you apart from the other contestants?
I think people can really feel my authenticity shine through when they speak to me. I am very easy-going and genuine. I think it shows in everything I do.
What’s something about you that people might find surprising or interesting?
That I grew up on an island.
If you could work on any dream project, with no limits on time or resources, what would it be?
I would open up animal shelters all over the world and rescue animals.
We have a few quick questions to wrap up the interview:
What’s a song that never fails to lift your mood?
Diet Pepsi – Addison Rae
What does confidence mean to you?
It means being unapologetically myself in everything I do. Not caring what people may think of me and just enjoying myself.
If you had to swap lives with someone for a day, who would it be and why?
David Attenborough because he gets to witness incredible wildlife in person and teach people about it.
What’s one thing you always have in your handbag (besides your phone)?
Lip balm
Window or aisle seat on a flight?
Window, always
