The Gold Coast is gearing up for an inspiring day of action as Dementia Australia’s largest annual fundraising event, Memory Walk & Jog, makes its much-anticipated return to the region. On Sunday, 1 June, Pratten Park in Broadbeach will come alive with walkers, runners, and joggers uniting to raise critical funds and awareness for people living with dementia, as well as their families and carers.

Dementia is one of Australia’s most pressing health challenges, affecting millions of lives each year. Events like Memory Walk & Jog play a pivotal role in addressing this challenge by not only funding vital services but also encouraging brain health through physical activity and community connection.

This year, Dementia Australia hopes to break records by engaging more participants across the nation than ever before, with an ambitious fundraising target of over $2 million. Funds raised will go directly towards providing support, education, and essential services for those impacted by dementia.

A Call to Action from Wally Lewis

Renowned Dementia Australia Ambassador, rugby league legend Wally Lewis AM, has laid down the challenge to Gold Coast residents to step up and get involved in this year’s event. Wally, whose personal experience with dementia drives his passion for raising awareness, urged the community to unite in support of the cause.

“Queenslanders have always stuck together during the hard times, and it doesn’t get much harder than watching someone you love impacted by dementia,” Wally said.

“Memory Walk & Jog provides a day that family and friends can come together in a fun environment to promote good health and support each other, especially supporting those who are living with dementia.

“With dementia being the leading cause of death for women and the second leading cause for men in Australia, many Queensland families will unfortunately be touched by dementia in some way, shape or form. Raising awareness and providing support, not only for those living with dementia, but for family and friends, to help provide them with the tools to support and care for their loved ones, is not only needed but it’s a necessity.”

Whether you choose to walk, jog, run, volunteer, donate, or simply cheer from the sidelines, there’s a way for everyone to get involved. With the event promoting physical activity, social connection, and brain health, it’s the perfect opportunity to give back while making a positive impact on your own well-being.

Dementia in the Gold Coast Community

Dementia is a growing concern for many Australian communities, and the Gold Coast is no exception. Dementia Australia estimates that there are more than 10,665 people living with dementia in the Gold Coast region alone. As the population ages, these numbers are expected to increase significantly, making events like Memory Walk & Jog more vital than ever.

Professor Tanya Buchanan, CEO of Dementia Australia, highlighted the important role Memory Walk & Jog plays in supporting local communities and spreading awareness.

“Not only does Memory Walk & Jog help raise vital funds, but it is an important opportunity to continue a national discussion about dementia and for everyone to get active and socially connect – two key things we can do to help reduce our risk of dementia,” Professor Buchanan said.

How You Can Get Involved

Registrations for the 2025 Memory Walk & Jog are now open, with opportunities for individuals, families, and groups to participate in a variety of ways. Whether you’re aiming to hit a personal best in the jogging category or simply taking a leisurely stroll with loved ones, every step counts towards creating a future where people impacted by dementia receive the support they need.

Those unable to attend in person can still contribute by donating, volunteering, or even organising a virtual event in their own community. Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by dementia.

Why It Matters

Dementia is currently the leading cause of death for women and the second leading cause for men in Australia. Its impact goes beyond those diagnosed, deeply affecting families, friends, and carers. Events like Memory Walk & Jog not only provide much-needed funds but also help to foster understanding and compassion in the broader community.

By participating in Memory Walk & Jog, you’re contributing to a brighter future for the 400,000+ Australians currently living with dementia and the countless others who will be affected in the years to come.

So, lace up your running shoes and join the movement on 1 June at Pratten Park, Broadbeach. Together, let’s walk, jog, or run towards a better future for those living with dementia.
