Australia’s oldest family-owned ecotourism retreat is celebrating a major milestone. O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat, located in the Scenic Rim in Queensland, turns 100 this year. Since the O’Reilly family opened their remote guesthouse in the heart of Lamington National Park in 1926, the retreat has become a pioneer of sustainable experiences for nature lovers. Today, the multi-award-winning destination is run by third and fourth-generation family members.
To mark the centenary, O’Reilly’s has launched a year-long programme of events, installations, and special promotions. The festivities began on March 8 at O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards, where three exclusive commemorative wines were unveiled. At the retreat itself, guests can explore an interpretive display in the Guest House theatrette that traces a century of family history. Outside, visitors can view vintage O’Reilly machinery for free. Between March 9 and May 29, the retreat is offering classic Billy Tea and damper on the Guest House lawn midweek from 10:30 am to 12 pm. Adventurous visitors can also join a weekly guided hike along the historic Stockyard Track.
Over the past century, O’Reilly’s has welcomed more than 2.8 million overnight guests. These visitors have collectively explored over 28 billion kilometres of the World Heritage-listed Gondwana rainforest, which is home to rare species such as the blue Lamington crayfish, Fleay’s barred frog, and Albert’s lyrebird.

The retreat’s history is filled with significant moments. In 1937, Bernard O’Reilly famously completed a ten-day trek to rescue survivors of the Stinson plane crash. Modern guests can retrace his 37-kilometre hike to Christmas Creek. The retreat also boasts the world’s first eco-friendly treetop walkway, created by Big Pete O’Reilly. This structure features nine suspension bridges rising 16 metres above the rainforest floor. For those seeking modern comforts, Pat’s Farm offers five architect-designed, off-grid luxury chalets complete with ducted air-conditioning and heated plunge pools.
The O’Reilly legacy continues through its younger generations. Shane O’Reilly, the third-generation Managing Director, focuses on blending conservation, hospitality, and innovation. His 19-year-old daughter, Grace, works across both the retreat and the vineyards. She notes, “Being part of our family business allows me to connect deeply to something my family has devoted their lives to for over 100 years. Hearing returning visitors’ stories from multiple generations reminds me why preserving and contributing to this legacy is so important”.
Ned O’Reilly, the 22-year-old son of ‘Lil Pete’ and Megan, shares a similar connection to the mountain. “I’ve been coming to the mountain since birth, it’s my home. I feel awe exploring Lamington and a responsibility to continue educating people about the wonders of nature. Celebrating 100 years of welcoming guests is a true testament to our family’s dedication”
