In a thrilling turn of events, former Gold Coast Suns AFL player Patrick Murtagh has secured a contract with the Detroit Lions, marking a significant milestone in his athletic career. This opportunity grants him the chance to earn a spot on the NFL roster, starting with the training camp. From there, he could either remain on the practice squad using an exemption or be elevated to the active squad, allowing him to play for the NFC North side.

Murtagh’s journey to the NFL began when he was selected to try out for the league through the international player pathway. He impressed talent scouts during the recent International Combine, earning himself a coveted opportunity in the world of American football.

Standing at an impressive height of 196cm, Murtagh brings a unique and developing skill set and athleticism to the Lions’ roster. Although he joined the team through the IPP program, he retains a special exempt status on the practice squad, similar to the path taken by Philadelphia Eagles’ Jordan Mailata in 2018. This special status allows Murtagh to continue his development and potentially secure a spot on the team’s final 53-man roster.

Murtagh expressed his excitement and gratitude on social media as he shared the news of joining the Detroit Lions. Taking to Instagram, he expressed his heartfelt appreciation for everyone who has supported him throughout his journey. Murtagh’s unwavering determination and hard work have paid off, opening the door to a promising NFL career.

“Detroit Lions bound! Beyond grateful for everyone that’s been a part of this journey. To my team around me, friends, family, and everyone else out there, thank you,” the 23-year-old posted on Instagram.

Under the guidance of second-year head coach Dan Campbell, the Detroit Lions made significant strides in the 2022 season, placing them on the cusp of playoff contention. In the recent NFL Draft, they further bolstered their tight end position by selecting Sam LaPorta from Iowa with the 34th overall pick. Murtagh’s addition adds depth to the team and provides them with another talented option at tight end.

Murtagh’s decision to pursue a career in the NFL stemmed from his lifelong passion for the sport. After being delisted by the Gold Coast Suns, the opportunity for a possible training camp in London emerged, and he seized it without hesitation. Now, his dedication and love for football have paved the way for him to showcase his skills on the biggest stage.
