Boral has officially withdrawn its development application for a controversial 56-hectare rock quarry at Reedy Creek on the Gold Coast. This decision comes after months of intense community pushback, with the Gold Coast City Council receiving almost 10,000 submissions against the project.

The building material giant originally planned to develop the heavily vegetated site, but community opposition ultimately forced a change of direction. In a recent statement, Boral confirmed the withdrawal, noting that they had listened to community feedback. The company is now investigating alternative uses for the land, which could potentially include residential development.

State Government Steps In

Before Boral pulled the pin, the state government had already intervened. In late March, they exercised call-in powers to take over the final ruling on the proposal, which was originally slated for mid-May.

To ensure the site is protected from similar proposals, Planning Minister Jarod Bleijie and the Crisafulli government have removed the Key Resource Area planning overlay. This crucial move legally prevents the area from being mined in the future.

Local representatives are celebrating the outcome. LNP Member Ros Bates shared her excitement online, stating, "I promised you there would be no quarry at Reedy Creek, and I’m beyond delighted to inform you that THERE NEVER WILL BE.". Local councillor Glenn Tozer also praised the community's effort, hailing the result as a win for people power. He noted his hope that the decision will provide the public with greater certainty regarding the future of the site.

That’s the end of the Reedy Creek Quarry Expansion
