The Quiksilver Pro and Boost Mobile Pro Gold Coast, the opening stop on the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT), will continue today with Round 3 of both events called ON. The men will start at 7:05 a.m. AEST with overlapping, 40-minute heats. Women’s Round 3 will follow at 12:45 p.m. AEST with overlapping heats, a first for the women.
“We are on straight away this morning at Duranbah,” said Kieren Perrow, WSL Competition Director. “We will start with men’s Round 3 at 7:05 a.m. AEST, then move into women’s Round 3. We will run overlapping heats for both rounds in order to capitalize on the conditions. Today will also be exciting as this is the first time we’ve ever run overlapping heats for the women’s event.”
The opening heat of the morning will be one to watch as former Gold Coast event winner and perennial title threat Filipe Toledo (BRA) takes on rookie Soli Bailey (AUS) in one of the round’s most exciting matchups.
Defending Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast winner Julian Wilson (AUS) will have his work cut out for him in Heat 5 of Round 3 when he comes up against wildcard Reef Heazlewood (AUS), who is fresh of a runner-up finish in the Red Bull Airborne yesterday.
Reigning seven-time WSL Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) will hope to bounce back from a near miss in Round 1 when she comes up against CT rookie Macy Callaghan (AUS) in the opening heat of Round 3.
Heat 5 of Round 3 will see an all-Californian matchup between Defending Gold Coast event winner and World No. 2 Lakey Peterson (USA) and injury replacement Sage Erickson (USA) who is hoping to use this opportunity to solidify her spot on tour for 2019.
