After what can only be described as a stellar year, kiwi Shane van Gisbergen can wrap up the 2021 championship today if he finishes more than 300 points ahead of teammate and seven-time champion Jamie Whincup.
Last night Shane claimed a nail-biting victory in the closing laps, which has it all, including an early safety car, rain in the closing moments and the return of the super-soft tyre.
Suppose Shane van Gisbergen can finish today's race ahead of teammate Jamie Whincup and his lead exceeds 300 points at the conclusion of racing at Sydney Motorsport Park. In that case, this will secure the driver his second championship before the finale at Bathurst on December 1-4.
Heavy rain has descended on the circuit and presented challenging conditions for all drivers in the shootout and support categories with the safety car in high demand; we will see how the 97 tracks this afternoon in the 250km race.
