In an action-packed first race on the streets of Surfers Paradise, defending champion Shane van, Gisbergen claimed his 20th victory of the season and in the process, secured his third championship victory.

In what has been a blistering two seasons for the kiwi, today was no different; after 250km, the race was won by a margin of almost seventeen seconds over David Reynolds, who started on pole.

Shane will now go into today’s race as the 2022 champion elect, with the trophy to be presented in Adelaide later in the year; this also puts van Gisbergen into a select club of only eleven drivers who have won back-to-back championships.

Post-race, Shane shared, “That was amazing; it was a great battle at the start; Dave was driving awesome. I enjoyed racing him; it’s been a while.
“Thank you to Red Bull Ampol Racing… what a year, it’s been a lot of fun.

When asked if it was emotional securing his second title, van Gisbergen said: “Nothing yet; I want to come out tomorrow and do the same job.

You can catch all of the action from the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 on Fox Sports, Kayo and Channel 7
