Eight-time World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) has announced that she will extend her break from full-time competition on the Championship Tour (CT) into the 2025 season.
In a statement, Gilmore cited the need to prioritise her health and personal pursuits.
“After careful consideration, I’ve decided to take another season away from the WSL Tour,” said Gilmore. “This time will allow me to focus on healing from some lingering injuries and redirect my energy toward continuing my adventures of surfing around the globe. I’m deeply grateful for the unwavering support of my sponsors, and I wish all the athletes on tour the best of luck this season!”
As a result of her continued absence, Stephanie Gilmore will receive the 2026 Season Wildcard, securing her return to the tour in 2026.
Luana Silva to Replace Gilmore in 2025 Season
With Gilmore stepping aside, her 2025 Season Wildcard spot was reassigned by the World Surf League (WSL) Commissioner’s Office. Brazilian surfer Luana Silva has been awarded the coveted position, stepping in as the next in line based on the 2024 CT rankings.
The wildcard decision came following Lakey Peterson’s prior assignment to the 2025 Season Wildcard. Peterson’s qualification allowed Silva to claim the available spot.
Silva, 20, showcased impressive form throughout the 2024 season, reaching two CT Quarterfinals before the Mid-season Cut and achieving another Quarterfinal appearance at the VIVO Rio Pro Presented by Corona, where she competed as a wildcard.
Her 2024 success extended to the global stage, advancing to the Quarterfinals at the Olympic Games Paris 2024. Silva further solidified her rising status by capturing the WSL World Junior Championships title in the Philippines, becoming the first Brazilian woman to achieve this feat.
Having initially qualified for the CT in 2021, Silva has competed in both the 2022 and 2024 seasons, and her recent performances position her as a strong contender for the upcoming tour.
We will eagerly await Gilmore’s return hopefully in 2026, while Silva’s inclusion adds an exciting dimension to the 2025 season.
What’s Next for Stephanie Gilmore ….
Will we see the eight team world champion return to the Championship Tour in 2026, or will we see her take to Snapper rocks as part of a event wildcard or exhibition heat similar to last year….
