Tatiana Weston-Webb, Olympic Silver Medallist and 2021 World Title runner-up, has announced her decision to withdraw from the remainder of the 2025 World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour. The Brazilian surfer shared that she is stepping away to prioritise her well-being.

“This has not been an easy time for me,” Weston-Webb said. “I am incredibly grateful for everything I have achieved in surfing so far, and for the support I have always received from my sponsors, team, and fans. Every achievement has been the result of intense and collective effort.”

The 28-year-old athlete has been a mainstay on the CT for nearly a decade, earning accolades such as 2015 Rookie of the Year, four CT event victories, and a Perfect 10 at Teahupo’o, Tahiti. She has placed in the top five of the CT in five seasons, most recently finishing as World No. 3 in 2024.

Reflecting on the emotional toll of elite competition, Weston-Webb noted the importance of acknowledging mental health in sports: “Recently, I realised that I needed to pay closer attention to my emotional health. As an athlete, I have always been passionate about what I do, but I also know that taking care of my well-being is essential to honouring my passion and continuing to compete at a high level.”

She continued, “Talking about mental health in sports is something I believe is important for all of us. I want to be honest with those who follow and support me by acknowledging that showing vulnerability does not make us weaker; on the contrary, it makes us more human and connected, and it also allows us to reach our full potential both in and out of competition.”

Weston-Webb made it clear that this is not a farewell from professional surfing. “This break is not an end, but a new beginning. I know that with everyone’s support, I will return to the water stronger, more self-aware, and more passionate than ever.”

The WSL has voiced its full support for Weston-Webb’s decision. “Tatiana’s well-being comes first, and we admire her openness in prioritising her health,” said WSL Commissioner Jessi Miley-Dyer. “Tati is one of the most dynamic and accomplished surfers of her generation. We know fans around the world will continue to support her on her journey, and we wish her all the best during this time.”

Weston-Webb’s break comes as Nadia Erostarbe (ESP) continues to serve as the replacement surfer for Johanne Defay (FRA) during the pre-Mid-season-Cut events. With Weston-Webb’s withdrawal, an additional wildcard spot will be opened up at each remaining stop on the tour.

From her Silver Medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics to her Gold at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games and multiple standout performances on the CT, Weston-Webb’s achievements speak to her impact on the sport. Her decision to pause is not only a personal one but also a meaningful moment in the ongoing conversation about athlete well-being.
