The 35-Degree Reality: Gold Coast Swelters as Heatwave Warnings Grip South-East

Gold Coast heatwave intensifies as temperatures soar to 37 degrees. Stay informed and safe during these extreme conditions.

South-east Queensland is set to swelter through the rest of the week, and the Gold Coast finds itself right in the epicentre of the escalating conditions. Today, temperatures are expected to climb drastically across the state. For Gold Coast residents, the mercury is expected to peak between 34 and 37 degrees.

As these high temperatures persist, heatwave warnings remain active across most of the state’s east and interior. While intense heat is the defining characteristic of the week, the current forecast warns of a complex and potentially dangerous weather day.

  • Surfers Paradise is forecast to hit 36
  • Coomera is forecast to hit 35
  • Coolangatta is forecast to hit 32
  • Nerang is forecast to hit 37

Brace for the Double Whammy

The story today isn’t just about managing the sweltering temperatures; severe weather is also on the radar. The Gold Coast forecast points to partly cloudy conditions with a slight chance of showers starting late this morning. More concerning, however, is the likelihood of a thunderstorm developing from late this morning onward.

Meteorologists warn that this event could turn severe, bringing damaging winds, large hail, and heavy rain that may quickly lead to flash flooding. Keep an eye on wind conditions, which are expected to be north to northwesterly at 15 to 25 km/h, gradually becoming light as the evening approaches.

This threat follows a recent period where wild weather hammered the south-east over three days, resulting in damaged properties and widespread power outages.

Keeping Cool and The Forecast Ahead

Given these escalating conditions, personal safety remains paramount. Severe heatwaves pose a real danger to many, especially vulnerable individuals such as older people, babies, children, and those with existing medical conditions. To keep your home comfortable, ensure you close your windows and draw blinds, curtains, or awnings early in the day to effectively keep the heat out. If available, using fans or air conditioners is key to staying cool.

For those looking for immediate relief, seeking a cool place, like a local library, community centre, or shopping centre, or simply staying indoors at home, is highly recommended.

There is a silver lining coming into view, however. We should begin to see some genuine relief from these intense temperatures as we move into early next week. Cooler, drier air is forecast to move into the region, likely leading to the cancellation of the current heat wave warnings by Monday.
