The Social Media Ban is Looming - Here's How to Save Your Digital Life

Learn about the impending Social Media Ban in Australia. Protect your posts and memories before the deadline hits.

Hey, we need to talk deadlines. The world-first social media ban for users under 16 is closing in fast in Australia, and if you’ve received a notice from Meta, the clock is ticking. While the law officially takes effect on December 10, Meta is starting the account purge early. If you want to keep your memories, posts, and chats, you need to act immediately.

Here is your essential, non-stuffy guide to securing your digital life before the door closes.

The Countdown Is On: Dec. 4th is Your Deadline

While the new law preventing under 16s from holding accounts doesn’t officially hit until December 10, Meta is beginning to remove access for users it believes are under age 16 starting on December 4. That’s a full week ahead of the government deadline.

If you flagged as under 16, Meta is delivering the news via email, SMS, and within the app, giving you a 14-day warning that your time on the platform is nearly up “due to laws in Australia”. Meta is racing to remove hundreds of thousands of accounts: at least 350,000 users from Instagram and 150,000 from Facebook by the official deadline.

This ban applies not only to Meta platforms (Instagram, Facebook, and Threads) but also to nine other major services, including TikTok, Snapchat, YouTube, X, Reddit, Kick, and Twitch, totalling eleven platforms in Australia’s world-first ban. For now, Messenger is the only Meta platform currently not covered by this law.

The Must-Do: Your Download Checklist

The most crucial move right now is saving your content. Meta is nudging younger users to download and save their posts and private messages before it is too late.

You need to secure your data—that means choosing to “download or delete” your account data from Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.

Along with downloading your memories, the company offers a lifeline for the future: you are advised to provide contact details so Meta can reach out after your 16th birthday. This way, you might be able to reopen an account later.

What to do if the Algorithm gets it wrong?

Look, sometimes the systems designed to detect age aren’t perfect. Not everyone who receives the two-week warning will actually be under 16.
If you know you are 16 or older and receive a warning anyway, Meta has revealed details on how its appeals process will work.

1. Provide Government-Issued ID: This means supplying official documentation like a driver’s license.

2. Undergo a Facial Age Scan: You can take a “video selfie” to allow the system to estimate your age.

This age-check process is handled by Yoti, a market leader in facial age estimation. While Yoti claims they do not store your facial data or ID after the check is finished, independent trials show that these facial age checks are less accurate right around the crucial 16+ cut-off. Based on government testing, there was an average 13.9 per cent false negative rate for 16-year-olds, meaning roughly one in seven 16-year-olds could potentially be wrongly blocked.
