The Straddie Hotel Has Reopened and It's Everything a Queensland Summer Should Be

The Straddie Hotel is back. North Stradbroke Island's Point Lookout iconic pub has reopened with ocean views, fresh seafood and laidback beach vibes.

There are some places that just feel like summer. The Straddie Hotel is one of them.

North Stradbroke Island’s beloved pub has officially reopened following an inspired redevelopment, and it’s brought with it everything you’d expect from a Queensland beach institution: cold beer, ocean views, fresh local seafood and that effortless island rhythm that makes you want to stay for just one more round.

Long known as the beating heart of Point Lookout, The Stradbroke Island Beach Hotel has been a gathering place for locals and holidaymakers for generations. It’s the kind of pub where everyone feels at home the moment they walk in, where regulars catch up over a schooner and visitors quickly understand why people return year after year.

The redevelopment has given the venue a fresh look while preserving the unmistakable soul of the island. According to General Manager Fenn McDonnell, that balance was always the priority.

“Reopening The Straddie Hotel has been about protecting everything locals and regulars love while elevating the experience for a new generation,” McDonnell said. “We’ve created a venue that’s relaxed, social and unmistakably Queensland. Seeing people come back, reconnect and make fresh memories is what this moment is all about.”

Step inside and you’ll find a space that feels like a love letter to Queensland beach summers past. Designed by KP Architects and culture agency Example, every corner of the new Straddie Hotel evokes that nostalgic, sun-soaked feeling.

Think sun-washed colours, terracotta and green tones, crochet accents, bamboo blinds and tropical greenery. Vintage surf posters line the walls alongside nostalgic memorabilia, while mosaic tabletops and rattan lounges complete the picture. It’s relaxed, it’s retro, and it fits the island perfectly.

The redevelopment has also introduced a collection of new and refreshed spaces designed to bring guests closer to the ocean and each other. Highlights include a breezy upper deck, a second bar right in the heart of the action, a reimagined bistro and main bar, and an expanded all-weather deck with panoramic views. A new operable roof system lets the sunshine in while keeping the rain out, meaning those ocean views are available whatever the weather.

The Headland Room has been transformed into a stunning beachfront space overlooking Cylinder Beach, complete with its own sunset balcony bar. It’s perfect for celebrations, hosting up to 120 seated or 250 cocktail-style, and on select evenings it opens to the public for a dining experience with views that are hard to beat.

Island fare with generous portions

The bistro menu celebrates classic pub fare with island flair. The focus is on locally sourced produce, with island-sourced oysters and fresh local seafood taking centre stage.

Highlights include fish tacos, prawn and bug cocktails, and sweet and spicy chicken wings, alongside hand-stretched pizzas and pub staples like chicken schnitzel, beach fish and chips, and beach burgers. The grill turns out flame-grilled chicken and Black Angus rump, while lighter options include daily market fish and vibrant summer bowls. Portions are generous, and the service approach is chilled-out yet attentive, delivered with what the team describes as “Stradbroke heart.”

For those early morning beach sessions, a kiosk will open during the summer months catering to surfers and beach goers with breakfast staples and coffee.

When it comes to drinks, signature cocktails include the Straddie Island Iced Tea, Coco Margarita and a rotating Slushie of the Month. Local beer from Straddie Brewing Co is on tap alongside a selection of easy-drinking wines and classic tinnies.

The reopening comes at an important time for North Stradbroke Island. Following recent cyclone impacts, the return of The Straddie Hotel is injecting energy into local tourism and supporting businesses and jobs across the island.

With refreshed family-friendly spaces and a packed calendar of live music and events showcasing local talent, the pub once again anchors the island’s social scene. The venue will continue its longstanding support of major island events, including the Straddie Salute and the Straddie Invitational, alongside ongoing community initiatives that celebrate the culture and people of North Stradbroke Island.

Whether you’re a local popping in for a midweek catch-up, a day-tripper from Brisbane chasing fish tacos and ocean views, or a holidaymaker settling in for a long summer stay, The Straddie Hotel is ready and waiting.
