It’s that exciting time of year again! We’re chatting with Tiana Meehan of New South Wales, one of the 28 remarkable and accomplished women from diverse backgrounds vying for the title of Miss Universe Australia 2024. The winner is set to be crowned in the Grand Ballroom at Crown Perth on the 5th of September.

So, Tiana, why don’t you start by telling us a bit about yourself?

I’m a humble and innovative Wiradjuri woman with a deep love for the classics and the arts. As an empathetic and sensitive person, I value kindness and love in all aspects of life. Having travelled widely and lived overseas, I am an independent thinker who embraces new ideas and perspectives. My creativity knows no bounds as I constantly seek to express myself through various forms of the arts. With a diverse mix of experiences, I strive to bring positive change and understanding to the world around me.

What inspired you to take the leap and enter Miss Universe Australia?

In a moment of self-reflection, I discovered a lot of personal growth. I felt a strong sense of self that I had never felt before, and I was proud of the woman I am becoming, bringing a clear vision for the impactful change I want to create. I entered Miss Universe Australia because I was sparked by a deep yearning to connect with fellow creatives who share a dedication to using diverse platforms for personal growth and community upliftment. Embracing my role as a leader, I aim to drive positive change and inspire others to do the same. The platform provided by Miss Universe Australia empowers me to use my strengths and passions to create transformative change and empowerment on a larger scale.

My advocacy for Arts for Mental Health is deeply rooted in my journey as a performer and artist, where I have witnessed firsthand the huge impact of creative expression on well-being. I firmly believe in the healing power of the arts, viewing it as a tool for self-discovery, resilience-building, and overall mental wellness. Access to artistic expression is crucial in nurturing well-being and mental health for all, and I am dedicated to championing this cause.

As part of the program, you had the amazing opportunity to travel to Vietnam, courtesy of Vietjet, and stay at the beautiful Hoiana Resort. How was that experience for you?

Being able to meet all the other women from the other states is something I am so grateful for. Knowing I have friends from all over Australia is very special. Visiting Vietnam and staying at Hoiana Resort & Golf was an experience like no other. The resort’s rooms were seriously luxurious, each with its own vibe, but of course, I loved getting to indulge in all the food.

We got to go down to the golf course on one of the days, and I never knew I had a hidden talent for golf. Those holes in one took me by surprise! I guess years of ballet training really helped with my posture; who knew it would come in handy on the golf course?

What would you say was the highlight of the trip?

The highlight of the trip, without a doubt, was the heartwarming visit to Hearing and Beyond. Learning Vietnamese sign language from the children and witnessing the dedication of the teachers in creating educational and growth opportunities for children with hearing loss was truly humbling and grounding. The moment when Troy announced the generous donation of ten thousand dollars to support the school was a deeply emotional experience. The gratitude expressed by Ms. Mai, the children, and the entire community was overwhelming. Being able to share in that moment of generosity and compassion and feeling the immense impact it would have for them was a moving and unforgettable experience for me.

Can you describe an experience in Vietnam that pushed you out of your comfort zone?

A moment in Vietnam that had me totally out of my element was trying to strike elegant poses in a beautiful bikini for a swimwear shoot on a stunning beach location while playing volleyball (coordination skills MIA even for a dancer). I was in full glam makeup, the weather was rainy but over 30 degrees Celsius, and my naturally curly hair was fighting to stay in place amid the rain and humidity. Let’s just say, I definitely embraced the challenge. It was a lot of fun and a lot of laughs.

Your next question comes from our current Miss Universe Australia, Moraya Wilson. Imagine you’re standing on stage with the title of Miss Universe Australia 2024. What advice would you give to your younger self?

If I were to stand on stage as Miss Universe Australia 2024, I would share this advice with my younger self: Stay true to being an independent thinker, embrace your vulnerability, humility, and empathy. Work hard, stay dedicated to your journey, and trust that you will achieve what you set out to do. Remember, there is strength in vulnerability, and embrace your unique cultural roots and stories with pride. Keep that fire in your heart burning bright, keep learning, growing, and evolving. Your journey is yours to own, so keep pushing forward with passion and purpose.

With everyone bringing their own unique flair to the program, what would you say sets you apart from the other contestants?

I aim to represent and honour my Wiradjuri heritage and hope to become the first-ever Indigenous Miss Universe Australia. As a Wiradjuri woman, I have a voice that deserves to be heard and a narrative that deserves to be shared. Winning this title would not only be a personal achievement but also a platform to elevate and honour our First Nations people in a graceful and empowering manner that resonates with authenticity, positivity, and inclusivity. It’s time to stand tall and showcase to the world the strength and beauty of our heritage. By embodying inclusivity, I want to show how Australia celebrates diversity and embraces all voices.

What’s something about you that people might find surprising?

You might find it surprising that despite my profession as a professional dancer, I am ultimately quite clumsy. It’s like I have two left feet offstage.

If you could work on any dream project, with no limits on time or resources, what would it be?

If I could pursue any dream project with unlimited resources, I would launch my swimwear label ‘AKUNA,’ celebrating Indigenous Australian culture and artwork in collaboration with Indigenous artists. Additionally, I would create a massive feature film inspired by the golden era of Hollywood, paying homage to legends like Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Cyd Charisse, and Ginger Rogers with a fresh and captivating flair.

We have a few quick questions to wrap up the interview:

If you could instantly master any skill, what would it be and why?

If I could instantly master any skill, it would be cooking so I could ditch those frozen meals and whip up some healthy dishes. I would love to throw epic gourmet dinner parties!

What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?

One of my biggest adventures is living it up in New York City all on my own. It was an eye-opener and a whirlwind of excitement.

Do you have a guilty pleasure that you enjoy?

It’s hard to choose as I have a few. Cozying up for a Harry Potter marathon, lots of chocolate, and of course, shopping!

If you could have any superpower for a day, what would it be and how would you use it?

If I could have any superpower, it would be to time travel. I’d love to witness history and explore every decade. Especially enjoying my time in the 1800s living my Bridgerton fantasy, as well as dancing with Gene Kelly (hopefully as graceful as Cyd Charisse) and witnessing the evolution and influence of music throughout time. Most importantly, I would want to see the power of Indigenous storytelling to preserve history, celebrate and learn about my identity, and inspire a legacy of strength and unity.
