Whincup fires first shot at Bathurst

Six-time Supercars Champion Jamie Whincup has fired the first shot in the opening practice session of the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.   Despite an early spin into the gravel, Whincup topped the timesheets with a lap of 2:05.95s in the first practice session at Mount Panorama.   Today also saw a return to Bathurst of Chaz Mostert and James Courtney after both drivers missed last year’s race through injury. A crowd of up to 200,000 is expected to flock to Mount Panorama over the next few days as fans celebrate the legendary Peter Brock on the tenth anniversary of his passing.   Supercars drivers will do a special lap of Mount Panorama in some of Brock’s famous Bathurst cars. Brock’s brother Phil will also present the Peter Brock Trophy to this year’s winners.   Qualifying will be held tomorrow ahead of Saturday’s Top 10 shootout and Sunday’s 1000km race.   The Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 will be broadcast live on Fox Sports and Network Ten and WIN TV in some regional area.
