Hook Island, one of the most breathtaking destinations in the Whitsundays, is set for a remarkable revival with plans for a world-class eco-lodge. The ambitious project aims to redefine sustainable luxury travel in Australia, blending cutting-edge design with a deep respect for nature.

Expected to open in 2027, the eco-lodge will offer visitors an immersive experience in one of Queensland’s most pristine environments. The development promises a harmonious balance between luxury and conservation, allowing guests to reconnect with the raw beauty of Hook Island while minimising environmental impact.

A Vision for Sustainable Luxury

The transformation of Hook Island is being led by Epochal Hotels’ CEO Glenn Piper, who, alongside a group of dedicated investors, acquired the leasehold in 2022. Their goal is to restore the island’s appeal, which had been significantly impacted by past cyclones, and create an eco-conscious retreat that celebrates the island’s unique natural and cultural heritage.

Piper emphasised the importance of preserving Hook Island’s essence while offering a world-class experience.

“Hook Island is a truly spectacular part of the world—its raw beauty deserves a sanctuary that both preserves and celebrates every facet of its charm. Our vision is bold: to create an experience that redefines luxury travel through a deep, authentic, and wild-spirited connection to nature.”

Spanning 9.3 hectares, the eco-lodge will feature 39 biophilic cabins, an arrival pavilion, two unique dining experiences, forest eco pools, wellness spaces, and a variety of adventure activities—all carefully designed to honour the island’s landscapes and marine surroundings.

Piper described the project as a “labour of love”, saying:

“We’ve poured our hearts into blending thoughtful design with a profound respect for the island’s heritage and delicate ecosystem. After being closed for more than a decade, we can’t wait to soon welcome overnight guests and day visitors alike to experience its magic firsthand.”

World-Class Design Meets Nature

In collaboration with globally renowned design firm Luxury Frontiers, the eco-lodge is being developed with a “barefoot luxury” ethos. The firm, known for its sustainable resorts such as Madwaleni River Lodge (South Africa), Naviva, a Four Seasons Resort (Mexico), and Nayara Tented Camp (Costa Rica), has embraced a “Nature Taught” philosophy in shaping the Hook Island experience.

The architecture draws inspiration from the island’s natural contours, seamlessly integrating into the landscape. Interiors will reflect Hook Island’s vibrant palette, incorporating earthy browns, lush greens, and deep ocean blues, as well as accents inspired by local birds, coral, and marine life.

The resort will offer six distinct accommodation styles, positioned across forest and beachfront settings, each featuring its own unique design.

Key Amenities:

  • Arrival Pavilion – A striking architectural entrance welcoming guests to the island.
  • Explorer’s Lounge – A storytelling hub showcasing Hook Island’s rich history.
  • Beach Club – A relaxed, all-day dining venue with a bar, outdoor fire pit, pool, and lounge deck overlooking Hook Passage.
  • Nordic Cycle Forest Spa & Eco Pool – A tranquil retreat for relaxation, inspired by the surrounding forest.
  • Clifftop Fine-Dining Restaurant – A standout culinary destination perched on a dramatic clifftop, offering breathtaking views of Stingray Bay and a dining experience centred around the finest local produce.
  • Lounge, Yoga Pavilion & Kids Adventure Club – Spaces designed for families, encouraging both exploration and relaxation. A special nature play area will introduce young guests to the island’s environment, fostering an early appreciation for conservation.

Graeme Labe, Managing Partner and Chief Design Officer of Luxury Frontiers, highlighted the significance of this project, saying:

“We are privileged to help bring this responsible eco-tourism destination to life. We’re revitalising a beautiful location with a design ethos that aligns with an inspired vision for purposeful, adventurous travel. The design is grounded in the island’s natural, social, and historical elements to create an authentic sense of place.”

A Commitment to Conservation and Eco-Tourism

Hook Island spans 58 square kilometres within the iconic Great Barrier Reef, featuring lush forests, secluded beaches, and diverse ecosystems. The development team is working closely with environmental consultants to ensure that every aspect of the project aligns with the island’s ecological needs.

The resort’s cyclone-resistant, modular architecture has been strategically designed to blend into the island’s natural surroundings while reducing environmental impact. Extensive tree surveys have guided the placement of structures to protect native plants and wildlife, reinforcing the island’s wild character.

To further minimise its ecological footprint, the project will follow a phased development approach, incorporating:

  • Erosion prevention measures
  • Sustainable waste management systems
  • Noise pollution reduction strategies
  • Water-efficient infrastructure, including recycled wastewater irrigation
  • Eco-friendly appliances and energy-saving technologies

Queensland’s Minister for the Environment and Tourism, Andrew Powell MP, welcomed the announcement, stating:

“We know we have some of the world’s most spectacular islands, and this development will allow visitors from around Queensland, Australia, and the globe to experience this natural beauty up close. After experiencing the natural wonders of Queensland, we know visitors will become passionate advocates to protect these fantastic areas.”

Amanda Camm MP, Member for Whitsunday and Queensland State Minister, also praised the project, calling it an exciting opportunity to showcase the region’s natural assets.

“It’s an exciting project—our beautiful natural assets in the Whitsundays are under-utilised, and as the local member I look forward to working with the proponent to progress this innovative proposal.”

Earlier this year, Hook Island was awarded a grant from The Department of Tourism and Sport’s (DTS) Growing Future Tourism (GFT) Fund, a program designed to boost new tourism opportunities in Queensland. The funding will support the development’s sustainability initiatives and help position Hook Island as a premier eco-tourism destination.

With an opening date set for 2027, the project is poised to set a new benchmark for sustainable luxury travel. More details will be released as the development progresses, offering a glimpse into the future of responsible tourism in the Whitsundays.
