Gold Coast radio listeners woke up to a massive shock this morning with the news that Sea FM breakfast duo Bronte Langbroek and Danny Lakey have been sensationally axed.
Appearing on the air this morning simply to make their farewell announcement, the pair confirmed they will not be returning to their regular slot. They completed their final on-air show yesterday before the network pulled the plug.
Massive Shake-Up at Southern Cross Austereo
The sudden departure of Bronte and Lakey comes just days after their parent company, Southern Cross Austereo (SCA), revealed that hundreds of jobs were on the chopping block across the business.
In an update given to the ASX on June 11, the company announced a major group-wide cost reduction program. The brutal cuts mean up to 300 jobs are on the line, with some employees from the network’s promotional team having already lost their positions. SCA stated that these heavy cuts are expected to save them up to $150 million each year.
What Management Says
SCA management has been clear that the current economic climate is driving these decisions. Chief executive Rohan Lund addressed the changes directly in the company’s recent ASX update, noting the difficult choices being made at the network.
“We must reset our cost base to meet current market conditions and capture the full benefits of scale across our trusted platforms for our audiences and advertisers, now and into the future,” Lund said.
“Unfortunately, this means saying goodbye to some talented colleagues who have helped build our business.”
