In a move that blends a rich surfing heritage with the demands of world-class competition, the World Surf League (WSL) has confirmed that the 2025 Bonsoy Gold Coast Pro Presented by GWM will relocate from Snapper Rocks to the legendary Burleigh Heads. The decision follows extensive assessment of recent cyclone-induced damage to Snapper’s famed sandbank, a vital feature that currently cannot support the elite-level waves required for the Championship Tour (CT).

Set to run from May 3 to 13, the much-anticipated CT event will now unfold at Burleigh Heads—an iconic right-hand point break etched deeply into the fabric of Australian surfing history.

Snapper Rocks, part of the globally renowned “Super Bank” that stretches through to the Kirra groyne, is celebrated for its endless, high-performance waves. However, following the passage of ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred in early March, that celebrated stretch has been transformed. A deep trough has formed across the bank, dramatically altering the wave dynamics and stripping the beach of the sand essential to forming its trademark rides.

While the Tweed Sand Bypass System typically accelerates sand recovery at Snapper Rocks, extensive erosion along the Tweed Coast has disrupted the usual replenishment cycle. According to the WSL, all signs point to the sand failing to return in time for the competition window in May.

A Difficult, But Decisive Call

“Snapper Rocks is one of the most perfect waves in the world, and this was an extremely difficult decision to shift locations,” said Andrew Stark, WSL APAC President. “Our priority is to ensure world-class conditions for our athletes and fans, and given the state of the bank at Snapper Rocks and the lack of time to replenish the sand, we are confident this is the right decision to ensure the success of the 2025 Gold Coast CT.”

Despite the disappointment, Stark noted the region’s good fortune in having another world-class alternative just up the coast. “We will relocate this year’s event to the iconic Burleigh Heads,” he said, highlighting its pedigree as a destination rich in surfing history. “We look forward to celebrating this event in a community steeped in surfing history. We are grateful to our partners at Experience Gold Coast & Tourism and Events Queensland, who have been so supportive towards reaching this decision. We absolutely look forward to returning to Snapper Rocks in 2026.”

Burleigh’s Triumphant Return

The relocation marks a triumphant return for Burleigh Heads to the top tier of professional surfing. Revered for its powerful right-handers and steeped in history, Burleigh is part of the Gold Coast World Surfing Reserve and was the site of the world’s first man-on-man heats. For decades, it has hosted international competitions and nurtured the careers of some of surfing’s biggest names.

“For surfing fans, the relocation of the Gold Coast Pro to Burleigh provides a unique and very special opportunity to watch the world’s leading surfers do battle at one of the world’s most iconic surfing destinations,” said Experience Gold Coast CEO John Warn. “There is no doubt our famous Super Bank at Snapper will return better than ever… we look forward to seeing the Gold Coast Pro back to its rightful home for the 2026 event and beyond.”

The shift to Burleigh isn’t just about necessity—it’s a celebration of legacy. With its cobblestone point, Burleigh Hill vantage, and ability to deliver freight-train barrels mere metres from shore, the break promises a spectacular viewing experience for spectators and the perfect stage for elite surfing.

A Mobile Event with Flexibility Built In

Although Burleigh will serve as the primary venue for the 2025 Gold Coast Pro, WSL has confirmed that other locations across the Gold Coast—Greenmount, Kirra, and Snapper Rocks—remain under active consideration as mobile backup options. This strategic flexibility ensures the event can adapt quickly to conditions and deliver the best possible performance environment.

Importantly, the relocation does not impact the overall CT schedule. The WSL remains committed to showcasing elite surfing across the Gold Coast, leveraging its unique geography and diversity of breaks to keep the competitive standard at its peak. Stay up to date at worldsurfleague.com
