Today food delivery giant Deliveroo has announced that they will be closing down Australian operations, with all grocery, order and delivery services ceasing immediately; this will leave plenty of local restaurants and riders looking for alternatives to complete orders across the country.

The company posted a statement to their rider’s FAQ page this afternoon with the following statement.

“It is with deep regret that Deliveroo is taking the difficult decision to end our operations in Australia. This has not been an easy decision to make – we have carefully considered all options and we do not take the decision lightly.

At Deliveroo we’re on a mission to create the very best food delivery service in the world – for our customers, our restaurant partners and you, our riders. Over the last six years, we have worked hard to achieve this in Australia, and we truly value everything you have done so far to help get us to where we are.

However, where we cannot fulfil this mission to the levels we expect and to provide you the experience you deserve, we won’t operate. In Australia, we have concluded that achieving a sustainable position of leadership in the market is not possible without a disproportionate level of investment which would have highly uncertain returns.

Regrettably, therefore, Deliveroo Australia will not be accepting orders from this point onwards and operations will be ceasing imminently.”

“We understand this is difficult news. I want to express my sincere gratitude for all your hard work, your passion, and for working with our restaurant partners to bring millions of customers their favourite dishes over the last six years. It has been a great pleasure to work with you”

The company also stated that Deliveroo Australia has been placed into voluntary administration and appointed Korda Mentha as administrations, and riders who have recently worked with Deliveroo will receive further communications from Administrators shortly.

This comes after the company also announced in October they would be exiting the Netherlands this month. However, Australia’s collapse seems to have been within 24 hours and without any real warning.
