Five Decades of Tourism on the Gold Coast - Visitor Economy Grows to $8.7 Billion and Sets New Visitor Record

The Gold Coast has marked 50 years of tourism industry development. The city’s visitor economy is valued at $8.7 billion, and in the year to March 2026 the region welcomed a record 14.7 million tourists. The anniversary served as an occasion not only for celebratory events but also for a wide-ranging reassessment of the journey taken by one of Australia’s leading tourism destinations.

Why People Come to the Gold Coast

Australia is not short of beaches, thanks to the country’s highly favourable geographic and climatic position. However, the Gold Coast stands out above the rest, combining a tropical climate with exceptional infrastructure. Nearby Brisbane is one of Australia’s largest cities, and like the Gold Coast it offers everything needed for entertainment — museums, restaurants, bars, nightclubs and a wealth of attractions. And of course, the Gold Coast boasts some of Australia’s finest beaches, with crystal-clear water and white sand. Not to mention that the Great Barrier Reef lies close by — one of the world’s premier natural attractions, drawing visitors from across the globe.

Among the millions of guests who arrive on the Gold Coast each year, lovers of gambling entertainment make up a notable share. Australia as a whole is characterised by high levels of public engagement with the gambling industry: permissive legislation, well-developed land-based casinos infrastructure and the widespread reach of online platforms together generate sustained demand.

The popularity of land-based casinos remains strong despite growing pressure from online gambling platforms. Thousands of games available from home, convenient mobile apps and numerous promotions are advantages that land-based casinos struggle to match. Operators compete actively for new customers, offering welcome offers and no-deposit starter bonuses. The popularity of deposit bonuses at australian casinos — as recorded by industry portal data — clearly illustrates the scale of this competition.

Yet this has not hindered the success of land-based casinos in the city. The reason is that tourists frequently combine a casino visit with other forms of resort leisure. For the Gold Coast itself, the gambling segment remains one element of a broader experience economy, complementing beach holidays, theme parks and business events.

The Experience Gold Coast Anniversary Initiative

Experience Gold Coast has unveiled a commemorative project titled 50 years of Destination Stewardship: The Gold Coast Visitor Economy. The project represents a systematic effort to document the city’s tourism industry history over half a century. It covers the period from 1975, when the first dedicated tourism bureau was established, through to the present day. The initiative is aimed both at industry professionals and at the broader public interested in understanding the growth mechanisms behind the world’s leading tourism destinations.

What the Project Contains

The anniversary initiative has produced two key outputs: a digital book and an accompanying video. The materials capture the pivotal milestones and decisions that shaped the region’s trajectory, and illustrate the transformation of the Gold Coast from a local resort into an internationally recognised destination.

From a 1975 Marketing Bureau to the whole-of-city visitor economy Model

The story begins in 1975 with the establishment of the first Gold Coast Visitors Bureau, whose remit was limited to destination marketing. Over time its responsibilities expanded and the organisation itself evolved into a whole-of-city visitor economy model, bringing together tourism, major events, education, arts and culture. In effect, over five decades a narrowly focused bureau transformed into an ecosystem in which different sectors of city life work toward a common goal.

The Drivers That Accelerated Growth

The project identifies several areas that proved pivotal to the industry’s development:

  • growth in domestic and international tourist arrivals
  • attraction of new air services that opened direct access to the city
  • the rise of the MICE sector (business events and conferences industry)
  • the launch of globally recognised marketing campaigns
  • successful navigation of periods of serious crises and disruptions

Partnerships Spanning Decades

The statistics on Experience Gold Coast’s relationships with the business community are impressive. Nearly half of the organisation’s industry partners have been working with it for more than 10 years. Around 50 companies have maintained partnerships for over 30 years, and 14 companies have sustained uninterrupted collaboration for more than four decades.

Sea World remains a founding partner of the organisation and has maintained continuous partnership throughout all 50 years — a record that is unique in the industry in its own right.
