The pristine shores of Burleigh Heads are set to sizzle with the return of the highly anticipated Gold Coast Open (GCO) in 2025. From February 14 to 16, the internationally acclaimed surf event will bring professional surfing back to Queensland, attracting world-class talent to compete in the World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) 1000 event.
This year’s Gold Coast Open promises to be more exciting than ever, as it also marks the second consecutive year of the longboard QS (LQS) being held at Burleigh Heads. As one of only two LQS events, this competition plays a critical role in qualifying surfers for the prestigious 2025 WSL Longboard Tour.
The stakes couldn’t be higher. With the QS divisions providing a pathway to the 2025 WSL Challenger Series, aspiring surfers from Australia and across the globe will descend on the Gold Coast to chase their dreams of making it to the top.\
Burleigh Heads, often heralded as one of the world’s most iconic surf spots, is the perfect backdrop for a showdown of skill, style, and determination. WSL APAC Regional Tour Manager Ty Sorati summed up the significance of the event:
“Burleigh Heads is an iconic, world-class wave, and it’s fantastic to see the event continuing to grow and evolve,” Sorati said. “We’re excited to continue our strong partnership with Surfing Queensland and can’t wait to see the next wave of Australian and international talent qualify for the upcoming Challenger Series season and World Longboard Tour.”
The 2025 GCO will showcase some of the biggest names in surfing. Fans can expect to see elite surfers like Kyuss King (AUS), the reigning Taiwan Open of Surfing QS 5000 Men’s Champion, as well as Dane Henry (AUS) and Ziggy Mackenzie (AUS), the current male and female ISA World Junior Champions, respectively.
Adding to the excitement, the LQS will feature the likes of Declan Wyton (AUS), a two-time Australian Longboard Champion and reigning GCO Men’s Longboard Champion, and Tully White (AUS), the defending Women’s Longboard Champion.
While the waves at Burleigh Heads are the star attraction, the Gold Coast Open is much more than just a surfing event. Over the course of three thrilling days, attendees will be treated to a festival-like atmosphere packed with activities. From live music and sunrise yoga sessions to skate clinics, pro skate demos, a buzzing beach bar, and a variety of food trucks, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Mark Flanagan, CEO of Surfing Queensland, expressed his excitement about the event’s growing reputation and its ability to bring together local and international talent.
“The Gold Coast Open has been a key focus for Surfing Queensland, and we’re proud to host an event that highlights both local and international talent at an iconic location in Queensland,” said Flanagan. “After the successful debut of a longboard QS at Burleigh Heads last year, we’re thrilled to witness such a diverse lineup of professional athletes competing. We invite everyone to join us for this three-day event, showcasing some of the finest surfing talent around.”
Adding to the legacy of the event, past winners of the Burleigh-based competition include some of surfing’s biggest names. Local legends like Mick Fanning, Julian Wilson, and Isabella Nichols have all claimed victory here, alongside other Championship Tour (CT) stars like Sally Fitzgibbons, Taj Burrow, and Owen Wright.
A Platform for Progress
The Gold Coast Open’s role as a WSL QS 1000 event is pivotal for surfers aiming to climb the competitive ladder. The points on offer during this event could determine who advances to the Challenger Series—a key stepping stone toward qualifying for the elite Championship Tour.
Similarly, the inclusion of the longboard QS continues to bolster opportunities for longboard surfers, giving them a chance to vie for spots on the WSL Longboard Tour. Events like this are helping to diversify the global surfing community while spotlighting different disciplines of the sport.
