Gold Coast Tip Fees: What You Need to Know About the $5 Charge

Discover everything you need to know about the new $5 Gold Coast tip fees introduced on July 1, including what is free and accepted.

As of July 1, a new $5 Gold Coast Tip fees have come into effect for Gold Coast residents disposing of general household waste at local Waste and Recycling Centres. The change represents a shift towards a user-pays system, designed to align with the waste levy set by the State Government and help the City recover associated waste management costs.

The introduction of the fee was supported by the Mayor and councillors in budget meetings last year. According to council officers, the $5 charge has been set at a “relatively low level” to ensure residents continue to use the facilities and to help the City meet its levy obligations without triggering a significant drop in waste volumes.

By comparison, other councils across South East Queensland charge significantly more for waste disposal. Brisbane City currently charges $17.40 for general waste and $14.60 for green waste, while facilities in the Sunshine Coast and Ipswich charge between $15 and $18.

The council notes that nearly half of all Gold Coast residents visit a waste centre just once a year, and around 30 percent do not use the services at all. Council insists the new gate fee ensures that the costs of landfill are shared by those who use the service the most, while also encouraging residents to reduce their waste output where possible.

What you need to know?

When do I have to pay the $5 fee? You will need to pay the $5 gate fee if your load contains any non-recyclable mixed landfill waste. This includes bagged household rubbish, soft plastics and plastic wrap, polystyrene and foam packaging, nappies and hygiene products, heavily soiled or contaminated items, and old or broken household items that cannot be reused or recycled.

Does the fee apply to renovation waste? Yes. The fee applies if your load contains any construction, demolition, or renovation waste from your home, such as timber offcuts and plasterboard.

What can I dispose of for free? Recycling and green organics remain free to dispose of, provided they are dropped off in separate loads containing no landfill or construction waste.

Are there specific conditions for free disposal? Yes. To avoid the fee for eligible recycling and green organics, the waste must come from a Gold Coast residential property (proof of residency is required) and must not be from business or commercial activity, including paid work or investment property maintenance. The materials must also be accepted for recycling or composting at the centre, be transported in an eligible vehicle such as a sedan, van, ute, or small trailer (not a truck), and stay within residential load size limits.

How do I pay the fee? All payments must be made via EFTPOS. Cash payments are not accepted at Waste and Recycling Centres.

When is the best time to visit? To avoid delays at the gate, it is recommended that residents plan their trip outside the peak periods of 10am to 2pm.
