Supercars has officially confirmed the return of James Warburton as Chief Executive Officer, marking a significant leadership shift aimed at propelling the championship into a new phase of commercial and sporting development.
Warburton previously held the CEO position from 2013 to 2017, a period defined by substantial commercial growth and enhanced financial stability for teams. His return has been warmly welcomed by Supercars leadership, with Chairman Barclay Nettlefold calling him “an energetic, strategic and results-driven executive.”
“He understands the DNA of our sport and has a proven track record of delivering commercial success and building trusted relationships with teams, partners, broadcasters and fans alike,” Nettlefold said. “His return reflects our ambition to strengthen Supercars’ position as a world-class sporting and entertainment product.”
During his earlier tenure, Warburton was instrumental in securing the landmark six-year media rights deal with Fox Sports Australia, a move that significantly boosted financial security across the paddock. He also played a key role in expanding the sport’s commercial reach and audience engagement.
Since his departure, Warburton has led high-profile organisations including APN Outdoor and Seven West Media. At APN Outdoor, he guided the company through a successful transformation and sale. As CEO of Seven West Media, he oversaw major advances in digital strategy and spearheaded key broadcast and streaming developments.
Returning to a sport he describes as holding “a very special place in Australian sport,” Warburton said he is eager to lead Supercars into its next chapter.
“This is a Championship with passionate fans, incredible on-track action, and huge potential to grow,” Warburton stated. “The business has evolved significantly in recent years and I’m excited to build on the strong foundation already in place. I want to thank the Board for the opportunity and can’t wait to get started.”
The leadership change follows the transition of current CEO Shane Howard into the role of Director – Motorsport and RACE Board Director. The Board expressed its gratitude to Mr Howard for his service and noted it looks forward to his ongoing contributions in his new position.
James Warburton will officially commence his role as CEO of Supercars on 23 July 2025.
