From standing in line outside Birdees early on a Sunday morning, mentally preparing for the interview just hoping to be given a chance, to receiving the text message saying “You’re in!” To the meetings, the training, selling tickets, the set-times being released, playing my first set, getting into the AGWA and Alize buckets, watching Taylor’s set, hearing my name read out, playing my final set and now sitting here as the winner of YOUR SHOT Brisbane and owner of some truly amazing memories. It has been an absolute rollercoaster of nerves, anticipation, anxiety, satisfaction, confusion, frustration, relaxation and ultimately…fun! It wasn’t all smooth sailing, I almost bailed before the interview and the first training was so frustrating that I thought I’d might as well just give it up.  But I quickly learned to love the training, and that became the highlight of my week.  Thanks to the people I met and made friends with.  Every week I would leave home early and sit in a café near the Academy with a coffee and my laptop and imagine that was my real life, travelling the world, sitting in random cafe’s making tunes and preparing a set for a gig that night.  For a while each Saturday I was already a DJ and it felt great. My love of YOUR SHOT started last year when I flew up from Tassie to watch my mate play and smash his first ever set.  The moment I saw him up on stage I knew that it was something I needed to experience myself.  I packed my gear up and came to Brisbane always with YOUR SHOT in the back of my mind.  Watching the final battle last year I remember thinking, hoping, wondering if maybe I could be up there at some point, crazy.  Hopefully there was someone out there in the crowd on Sunday thinking the same thing, to whoever you are, apply next year so we can find out.  The feeling of being up on stage was everything I ever imagined, to anybody who has ever sat up in bed at night, headphones in, eyes closed and imagined how that song would sound live with you at the helm, just trust me, it’s amazing.  By far the best part of the entire experience was the people I have met.  Being around a place where everybody shares the same passion as you is incredible, but I feel like with dance music we have something special.  Seeing a group of total strangers brought together by grooving to the same beats, that’s what it’s all about to me.
