Jimmy Barnes Roars Back with DEFIANT

Jimmy Barnes’ 21st album DEFIANT debuts at #1, marking his 16th solo chart-topper. A powerful return from Australia’s rock icon

Jimmy Barnes isn’t just back — he’s back with a bang. The inimitable king of Australian rock ’n’ roll dropped his 21st studio album, DEFIANT, and true to its name, it’s a bold, proud statement of resilience. Packed with fire, soul, and unmistakable Barnesy grit, DEFIANT is already making waves — not just as another notch on his discography but as a symbol of triumph over personal adversity and a reminder that Jimmy’s still got plenty left in the tank.

A New Day, A New High

Kicking off with the lead single “New Day”, DEFIANT wastes no time setting the tone. It’s hopeful, it’s punchy, and it’s unmistakably Barnes. The album features ten new tracks, including the soaring title track and live standout “That’s What You Do For Love”. Each song carries the energy of a man who’s been through hell and come out swinging. And now, the numbers are speaking just as loudly as the music itself.

Just a week after release, DEFIANT stormed to the top of the ARIA Albums Chart, earning Jimmy his 16th solo #1 album — and his 22nd overall when you count the Cold Chisel days. That puts him ahead of some of the biggest global acts in Aussie chart history, overtaking the likes of Taylor Swift (13) and Madonna (12), and even eclipsing The Beatles (14) for the most number one albums in any artist’s home country. That’s not just Australian music royalty — that’s global chart domination.

The Battle Behind the Music

What makes this success even more remarkable is what Jimmy’s been through just to get back on stage, let alone top the charts again. The past few years have been anything but smooth. Major surgeries — including a life-threatening heart operation — left the legendary frontman flat on his back. Every time he tried to get back up, another hurdle came his way. But giving up was never on the cards.

As he puts it, “An album is successful to me when I put everything down on tape. It is even more successful when those feelings connect with other people. To have my album hit number one is the cherry on top of all that.”

That fighting spirit fuelled the music and carried through to the national DEFIANT tour, which kicked off the day after the album’s release with a raucous show in Adelaide. Early reviews from the road are glowing, with fans and critics alike praising both the power of the new material and Jimmy’s unwavering stage presence. It’s not just nostalgia — this is a new chapter, forged from experience, hardship, and sheer determination.

A Career Like No Other

With DEFIANT, Barnes extends an already staggering legacy. His first solo #1 was all the way back in 1984 with Bodyswerve, and since then he’s been unstoppable. From Working Class Man and Freight Train Heart to Soul Deep and My Criminal Record, Jimmy has consistently delivered chart-toppers across four decades.

And of course, there’s Cold Chisel — a band that helped define Australian pub rock, and whose own 2024 best-of compilation 50 Years – The Best Of added another #1 to Jimmy’s tally. The Big Five-0 anniversary tour with the band in 2024 reminded everyone why Barnes remains a cornerstone of Australian music.

Matt Gudinski, Chief Executive of Mushroom Group, summed it up best: “Jimmy has been an integral part of Mushroom since his debut solo album Bodyswerve in 1984. I am extremely proud to be celebrating another #1 album, his 16th solo number #1, 41 years later. The DEFIANT album highlights Jimmy is showing no signs of slowing down.”

Defiant By Name, Defiant By Nature

There’s something poetic about the timing of DEFIANT — not just as an album title, but as a mission statement. It’s raw, powerful, and honest. Barnes has poured his heart (quite literally) into this record, and the payoff is more than commercial. It’s emotional. It’s communal. It’s classic Jimmy — loud, proud, and defiantly still here.

And while chart records are nice — and Jimmy’s certainly breaking plenty — it’s clear from his words and his songs that connection remains his driving force. “I am loving playing this bunch of songs. I couldn’t have done any of this without the support of my audience. So thanks to you all.”

No, thank you, Jimmy.
