Gaga fever hit Sydney a while back, with both poker-faced pups and well-schooled divas hitting up the Oxford Street scene for a glimpse of Mother Monster. Dressed in my leathers and sporting a white blonde wig (in Gaga’s image), I waited for hours at nightclub Nevermind for a spectacular Gaga peep show that was well worth the wait and then some.
Strutting in with a latex bodysuit and sexed-up dancers to boot, she played a number of her biggest hits and told the crowd about her honorary Sydney citizenship bestowed upon her by Clover Moore earlier that day. Woop woop! Having seen her live for the first time and being able to get so close, I realised just how much of a showperson she really is and discovered the reason why she’s been able to develop such a strong fan base.
I, too, was among hundreds of others who were speckled with goosebumps of sheer pleasure and delight as she belted out her Madonna-esque tunes—yes, that’s right, I’m likening her music to Madonna.
Monster Hall Mayhem
The actual reason for Gaga’s visit down under was her exclusive Monster Hall gig. My cousin, who had actually pulled me onto the Gaga bandwagon, won tickets to the concert and asked me if I’d like to join him (would I?!) So there we were, two people in only 1,000 who had a gold ticket to see Mother Monster perform live at Sydney’s Town Hall in one of the most intimate gigs the star has ever performed.
We waited in the cold for hours before being led into the venue. The performance was short, sharp, and sweet, the way it should be. She performed for one hour, praised the crowd for some serious outfit effort, and played all of her big hits that sent both boys and girls screaming, bursting eardrums everywhere. Her costume changes were impressive and frequent. My favourite would have to be her black mermaid outfit that she wore while sitting in a wheelchair. I’m sure Kurt would have loved it.
