A striking new mixed-use development has been proposed for Burleigh Heads, promising to redefine the area’s architectural landscape while embracing its evolving coastal identity. The project, Lantern Burleigh, is a collaboration between international design practice Plus Architecture and local developer CS Collective, bringing an innovative design vision to one of the Gold Coast’s most recognisable locations.
Situated on a prominent 834 sqm triangular peninsula site, the development spans 2,141 sqm of gross floor area and will feature eight luxury residences, complemented by a carefully curated retail precinct and a subterranean bathhouse inspired by ancient wellness traditions.
The design by Plus Architecture leverages the site’s unique position with bold sculptural elements and meticulously crafted details. Each residence is designed as an individual sub-penthouse, incorporating double-height spaces that maximise sweeping ocean views. The architectural language of Lantern Burleigh is defined by curved soffits, brick formations, and signature circular windows, reinforcing its lighthouse-inspired form.
Speaking on the design approach, Plus Architecture Principal, Chrisney Formosa, highlighted the significance of the site’s shape and location:
“The unusual triangular nature of the site allowed us to create something truly special for Burleigh Heads. We’ve conceived the building as a lighthouse for the area – visible on approach and offering expansive views across one of Australia’s most beautiful beaches. The monochromatic palette allows the sculptural nature of the development to be the hero, with an undercurrent of textural and tonal changes that reference the golden sands of Burleigh.”
Elevated Beachside Living and Wellness-Focused Amenities
Beyond its distinctive architecture, Lantern Burleigh is designed as a complete lifestyle offering, incorporating private and communal rooftop spaces with infinity pools, saunas, and steam rooms that capitalise on the site’s 360-degree ocean views.
CS Collective Director, Luke Carter, described the project as a transformative addition to Burleigh Heads:
“Our vision was to create an iconic landmark that resonates with the local community. This isn’t just about providing new homes – it’s about delivering a destination that becomes a defining feature of Burleigh’s evolving skyline while maintaining the area’s cherished coastal character.”
Echoing this sentiment, CS Collective Co-Director, David Skeen, emphasised the comprehensive lifestyle experience offered by Lantern Burleigh:
“What sets Lantern Burleigh apart is its complete lifestyle offering. The private and communal rooftop spaces, featuring infinity pools, saunas, and steam rooms, capitalize on the site’s stunning 360-degree ocean views. Combined with our premium wellness centre and carefully selected retail offerings, we’re creating a new standard for beachside living.”
A Thoughtfully Curated Ground-Level Experience
The ground-floor precinct of Lantern Burleigh is designed to attract leading food and beverage operators, working in harmony with the signature bathhouse and wellness facilities. The development team aims to draw top-tier craftspeople and hospitality experts from Burleigh’s renowned culinary scene, creating a space that integrates seamlessly with the surrounding area.
A refined material palette has been carefully selected to balance sophistication with coastal aesthetics. The combination of tinted glass, lush landscaping, warm crazy pavers, stacked tile, profiled concrete, and aluminium battens ensures that the development maintains a strong street presence while preserving residential privacy.
