Surfing Australia’s much-anticipated ‘Seas The Day’ women’s surf festival has sailed into the sunset after a spectacular weekend. The beachside event, held on the 21st and 22nd of June at Kingscliff Beach in northern New South Wales, was a resounding success, according to organisers, surfers, and spectators.

The festival, now in its second year, has rapidly become the world’s largest female participation surf event. It succeeded in exceeding all expectations yet again, with a diverse range of activities and an inclusive environment, celebrating women in the surfing community.

One of the participants, Kirra Dowling from Mollymook, was part of ‘The Simmers’ team. She reflected on the spirit of the festival, saying, “Seeing all the young girls smiling, so enthusiastic, and proud, and brave. You know, just to get out there and have a go. It’s good fun.”

Dowling was not the only one inspired by the event. Local surfer Maddie Jordan from Kingscliff entered a team with her friends and found the workshops inspiring. “They were all empowering women and really inspiring talks,” she added, highlighting the positive impact of the festival on the local community.

The festival wasn’t all about surfing, though. It also hosted a variety of workshops designed to inspire and empower women. One workshop of note was led by The Female Surfer and photographer Cait Miers. Chelsea Aston, a teammate of Jordan, found the workshop beneficial, saying it taught her how to “move my body in a more beneficial way, how to loosen up and get better waves and paddle better as well.”

Another participant, 13-year-old Gidget Kowalski from Bilinga, QLD, won Open Women’s Shortboard presented by Sambazon with the ‘Alley Cats’ team. She relished the opportunity to surf alongside her heroes and praised the event for encouraging everyone to have a go.

The festival saw participants travelling from far and wide to be part of the experience. Ily Fraser from team ‘Mini Micro Power’ travelled from Margaret River, WA, with her mum and sister, to surf in the popular Salty Girls Surf School U12 Mini Shredders division. Ily’s mum, Yvette Fraser, appreciated the team spirit and community feeling at the event, saying, “It’s been a fun weekend getting the girls involved.”

The event drew an estimated crowd of 15,000 people over the two days. Surfing Australia CEO Chris Mater expressed his satisfaction, “It has been an incredible two-days celebrating women in surfing at Seas The Day, the world’s largest female participation surf event.”

The festival culminated with a Celebrity Surf Challenge involving AFLW players and media stars. It was a highlight of the festival and a fitting end to the celebration of women in surfing. Mater extended his gratitude to everyone involved in making the event a success, from the hub hosts and guest speakers to the families and friends who put teams together and competed.

With another successful year under its belt, the ‘Seas The Day’ women’s surf festival continues to make waves in the surfing community. It is a testament to the strength, resilience, and vibrant spirit of women in surfing. As the sun sets on this year’s festival, we look forward to the promise of an even more inspiring event next year.
