Molly's Way: The Grit Behind a World Title

Discover the raw energy behind Molly Picklum's 2025 World Title in the film Molly's Way, Before she became the 2025 World Champion, Molly Picklum was a high-energy local from the Central Coast who simply swung at anything that moved

Before she became the 2025 World Champion, Molly Picklum was a high-energy local from the Central Coast who simply swung at anything that moved. A new short film from Surfing Australia Studios, released on 29 March 2026, chronicles this journey from a young grom to World Number One. Titled Molly’s Way, the documentary celebrates the instinct and willingness to “send it” that define her surfing style.

The film intentionally steps away from polished highlight reels to focus on the loud, slightly chaotic, and raw energy that sets Picklum apart. Viewers are treated to early footage and behind-the-scenes moments from her title campaign, narrated by those who witnessed her rise firsthand. Key figures like Vaughan Blakey, Glen ‘Micro’ Hall, Ryan Fletcher, Joel Vaughan, Hughie Vaughan, and Kobie Enright provide insight into her progression from local home breaks to the global stage. Throughout the narrative, the core themes are the grit, determination, and energy that have shaped her career.

The story peaks during the 2025 Final 5, following an unstoppable season where a world title felt deserved but was never guaranteed. Australian fans will recall the tension as the title race was dragged into a third match heat, forcing Picklum to find a way through the pressure. Reflecting on her victory, Picklum stated, “I signed up for the journey of it all, and I can’t believe a world title has become a part of it”. She added that she literally feels like one of the little kids screaming, only now she holds the trophy.

Her fearless approach has also earned the respect of 11-time World Champion Kelly Slater. Slater praised her ability to charge hard in heavy waves without fear, noting that she is pushing the level for the women’s field. He suggested her capabilities put pressure on her competitors, adding that she might have pulled further ahead if the waves had been bigger during the event.

Ultimately, Molly’s Way proves that authenticity leads to success. Hughie Vaughan summarises her journey as the “Same kid. Bigger stage”. By relying on her true self and a touch of Central Coast grit, Picklum achieved her lifelong dream exactly her way.
