Perth Street Circuit Plans Unveiled: A $217.5M Motorsport Dream

The Western Australian Labor Government has unveiled an ambitious multimillion-dollar motorsport and entertainment precinct centred around a new Perth Street Circuit at Burswood Park. The $217.5 million project, announced by Premier Hon Roger Cook, is being hailed as “a game-changer” for the state, promising to boost local tourism, generate tens of millions for the economy, and provide a dynamic, year-round event hub.

The plan, revealed Sunday morning, is a key feature of the Cook Labor Government’s re-election agenda, aiming to transform Burswood Park into a world-class motorsport and entertainment destination. If re-elected, construction of the precinct would begin in 2025, with the first street circuit race slated for the 2027 Supercars season.

The proposed precinct will include a state-of-the-art street circuit that incorporates new and existing roads in the Burswood area, connecting iconic Perth landmarks such as Perth Stadium and Crown Casino. Beyond motorsport, the development is designed to host a diverse range of events, featuring a permanent 20,000-capacity outdoor music amphitheatre inspired by Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl. The venue will also include permanent grandstands, a cycling track, a function centre, and infrastructure for night racing.

According to Premier Cook, the precinct is expected to be a transformative project for Western Australia, enhancing Perth’s global reputation as a premier destination for motorsport and live entertainment.

“This is about putting Western Australia on the map and creating a precinct that locals and visitors can enjoy all year round,” Cook said during the announcement. “The economic benefits of hosting a street circuit like this are enormous, from tourism dollars to job creation. This precinct is a game-changer for our state.”

Support from Supercars

The announcement at Burswood Park was supported by Supercars executives and drivers, underscoring the excitement within the motorsport community. Supercars CEO Shane Howard and COO Tim Watsford were present to back the project, with Western Australian Supercars drivers Aaron Love and Andre Heimgartner adding a local connection to the event.

Howard commended the WA Government for its vision, noting the importance of such infrastructure for the future of motorsport in Australia. “This is an exciting development not only for Western Australia but for motorsport fans across the country. A purpose-built street circuit like this has the potential to attract world-class events while providing a boost to the local economy.”

The WA Government’s plan is to complete the circuit in time for the 2027 Supercars season, further expanding Western Australia’s footprint in the motorsport calendar. Currently, Supercars visits Perth annually for the Perth Super440 event at Wanneroo’s Carco.com.au Raceway, which will mark its 100th Supercars race in June this year.

The financial benefits of the Burswood Park precinct extend far beyond motorsport. With infrastructure designed for multi-use functionality, the site is expected to host concerts, cycling events, community festivals, and corporate gatherings. The permanent outdoor amphitheatre, in particular, is positioned to become a cultural hub, drawing large-scale music and entertainment acts to Perth.

Deputy Premier Rita Saffioti highlighted the potential of the precinct to enrich community life. “This project isn’t just about motorsport. It’s about creating a vibrant space that Western Australians can be proud of. The Burswood Park precinct will give locals and visitors more opportunities to enjoy world-class events right in the heart of Perth.”

The Perth Street Circuit Catch: It all depends on the next WA Election

If re-elected, the Cook Government plans to begin construction on the Burswood Park precinct in 2025-26, with the goal of completion by 2027. The development will utilise a mix of newly constructed and existing roads to create the circuit, with permanent lighting infrastructure enabling night racing events—a first for Perth.

The announcement comes as motorsport enthusiasts gear up for the 2025 Repco Supercars Championship, which kicks off next month in Sydney. Western Australia will host its next Supercars event in June, with the Perth Super440 at Carco.com.au Raceway expected to draw thousands of fans.

With its bold vision for Burswood Park, the Cook Labor Government is betting on motorsport and live entertainment to secure Perth’s position as a vibrant, globally competitive city. Whether the re-election bid succeeds remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the proposed Perth Street Circuit could bring an exhilarating new chapter to the state’s motorsport legacy.
