Yesterday at the Repco Bathurst 1000, Scott Pye’s crash brought an unexpected twist to the opening day. In what should have been a highlight for the Red Bull Ampol Racing Team, celebrating Jamie Whincup topping the Practice 2 timesheets, the day instead ended with urgent overnight repairs. Pye, who shares the #87 Red Bull Ampol Chevrolet with championship leader Will Brown, made contact with the wall at The Cutting, leaving the team scrambling to repair the damage.
The Practice 2 session was originally shortened from 60 to 40 minutes due to delays from an oil spill and an unlikely track invader – a rogue Eastern brown snake. Despite these disruptions, Jamie Whincup managed to lead the times, but the session was ultimately cut short after Pye’s crash.
Reflecting on the incident, Pye was apologetic: “I just made a mistake. The Cutting is tricky… I didn’t think I was off line that much, but I just lost the rear, and that was it, game over.”
Fortunately, the Red Bull Ampol Racing Team worked through the night to repair the car, which is now ready to return to the track for today’s Boost Mobile Qualifying session. Fans can look forward to a jam-packed weekend, with the Top Ten Shootout on Saturday and the iconic Great Race on Sunday, kicking off at 11:30 a.m. AEDT.
