Stephanie Gilmore becomes an eight-time World Champion

Stephanie Gilmore coming from the fifth seed into the finals, prevailed against five-time champion Carissa Moore to become the Gr8est

The ultimate surfing showdown at Lower Trestles took place this morning, with Carissa Moore and Stephanie Gilmore going head to head for the 2022 world title.

Stephanie Gilmore coming from the fifth seed into the finals, prevailed against the best of the best and then came up against five-time champion Carissa Moore to claim victory and become the Gr8est, surpassing Layne Beachley’s long-held record of seven World Titles.

“I don’t have much left to be honest; I visualised it so much, I was like let’s do this I have a chance” “I was thinking out there, whatever happens, happens,” Gilmore said. “I’m really proud that I was able to make it past Brisa, Tatiana, Johanne – all of the most incredible female surfers in the world – and then to make it all the way in the final against Carissa, who in my mind, she’s the real world champ this year.”

This year has been a battle for the all-time champion, frequently fighting in head-to-head eliminations to maintain her ranking and having to withdraw from the opening round of the season after testing positive for COVID.
