Earlier this week, the seven-time champ was sent into isolation under the World Surf League’s COVID protocols after a positive result and was expected to be cleared to compete tomorrow.
However with competition called ON this morning, when it was time for her heat with Tyler Wright and India Robinson, Steph was nowhere to be found listed on the scoring but not able to compete.
Shortly after in the elimination round, Bethany Hamilton was called as a Wildcard replacement in Steph’s heat and proceeded through with a dominant performance to the round of sixteen.
With no official confirmation from Gilmores camp or the World Surf League yet, there are reports from other media organisations and journalists that Gilmore is set to withdraw from the event.
We are awaiting to see what happens with Steph’s release tomorrow and if organisers make any further statements in the coming hours.
Stephanie Gilmore has entered the WSL’s COVID protocols ahead of the Billabong Pro Pipeline. Based on the league’s protocols, Gilmore is expected to be cleared by January 31. The health of athletes, staff, fans and the communities where we compete, remains the WSL’s top priority.
